Royal Canine vs Raw and Orijins
 
Hi All - I have a question about feeding. I've read quite a few reports about how Yorkies are fussy eaters. Coco Chanel came with Royal Canine from the breeder, but I noticed that the first few ingredients were grains. Many breeders have indicated that it's the absolute best food for Yorkies and mine really seemed to like it. Now I'm feeding Nature's Variety Raw food, which she really likes, with Origins (supposed to be the ultimate food for dogs). She's not crazy about it. Is Royal Canine really the best choice for her? I'd appreciate your input so we can be sure we're feeding her correctly so she stays healthy and active. Thank you -- Diane :confused:

Those are definitely total opposites.

No one food is best.
Orijen has quite te name as the very best bc of its protein, etc. I'd look into the company hefore believing that...

Choose the company and then the food. No feeding trials, no vet nutritionist on staff, little quality control are all things to consider.

Royal Canin may not be the best choice, but it is a good choice, and if your Yorkie is doing well on it, you might consider continuing with Royal Canin. I wouldn't change the food unless my Yorkie was having problems with it. In other words, if my dog were doing fine on Royal Canin, but didn't like Orijen, I would continue with Royal Canin.

:thumbup: I agree. If you have no reason to change, I would stick with RC. If you start switching up foods, it may open different can's of worms.

It sounds like she is a tad picky too.. which will cause you more hassle in the long run. If she is healthy and eating- RC is perfect for her.

Which Royal Canin were you feeding, the ones I've seen don't have grains as the first few ingredients, they have chicken.

My yorkie likes Orijen, but the kibble is rather large, so I hate feeding it to her. She loves the Instinct raw, so I feed her that with a little bit of kibble. I may check out the Royal Canin. Anybody else reccomend it?

Since she likes the Natures Variety, you could also just feed that; you don't have to feed kibble (unless, maybe you're leaving kibble out for free feeding?). I feed premade raw, mostly Primal.

Thanks for the info all. I've decided to stick with Origens and Instinct Raw in the morning. Royan Canin just has way too much "junk" in it. Origens has mega protein and nutrients. I know it will keep her healthy and result in a beautiful silky coat when this puppy fur grows out. I do agree the Origens kibble is pretty large, so I cut them in half before I put them in her bowl. I want to keep feeding kibble because I know it's better for her teeth. I think feeding a combination of raw and kibble with give her a little variety - her tummy seems fine with this combination. --- Thanks for all the helpful insights - Diane

Mine eat Blue Buffalo Life Protection. They like it when I put wet food in there with it. The dry is just ok to them. I keep thinking about changing but do not know which food to go to. Senior dogs should not get too much protein. Spud tends to be fat so the Royal Canin may put weight on him. Is Blue buffalo a good food?

My Teddy is on Royal Canin Hepatic due to his liver shunts and he seems to like it but I guess we have no choice on that one. My Tucker is a healthy yorkie and yes indeed very picky. I have to confess we are currently feeding him Purina Beneful Kibbles I know it's not the best but we have tried Blue Buffalo and Grain Free Dry Food and after a while he loses interest in the food.

When someone tells me that their dog loses interest in his food, I always wonder why. People think it's boredom, but dogs don't really remember what they had to eat yesterday. If you dog loses interest in his food, I think he could be having a tummy upset or some other problem and he's just not that hungry. Another major cause of dog losing interest, is the food has gone stale. Most people don't understand that they store the food in an air tight bag, with NO air sitting on top of the food. For example, if you store food in a Tupperware container with several inches of air on the top of food, it will go stale much faster that if you keep food in a bag that most of the air has been squeezed out. Excess air will make for food go stale, and if you live in a humid climate this is even more important.

I'm slowly switching Scarlett from Blue Buffalo to Nature's Variety Instinct Raw. She absolutely loves it! I may leave some last kibble in her bowl for free feeding since she's still just a puppy.

I was using canine caviar and was very happy with it but it's sometimes difficult to find and ordering can take a while. I heard a lot of good things about RC, even though I don't like feeding grains to my dogs I switched. My dogs love it. Izzy and Niko are actually getting a little chunky so I had to cut back on the amounts. My golden retriever actually broke the gate trying to get to it. I have no problem finding it when I run low. Since I feed it to my rescues also I can't really plan amounts since I don't always know how many yorkies I'll have at any given time.
