Blue Buffalo? I talked with my breeder today and discovered she has the puppies on Blue Buffalo Life Protection dog food. Is this an ok kind of food? I'm planning on eventually switching to raw food diet but decided to keep her on whatever it was she was used to till I've had her for a month or two and she's all settled in than I slowly introduce her to to raw. Anyway should I continue with Blue Buffalo or is this dog food not ok? |
For the time being, I would just leave them on the Blue Buffalo. It isn't a bad food and as long as they are eating and healthy. It will be fine until you can switch them on something you feel comfortable with!! |
I feed Bella Blue Buffalo |
dog My to Yorkies are on the Blue Buffalo Life Protection. They eat it and have good stools. I just don't like all the complaints I read on line about this food. It seems to work for my dogs. I wonder what everyone else out there feeds their dogs and if you suspect Blue Buffalo is not a good dog food. |

Thanks for all your replies. I feel better knowing there are others who also use this. I think I'll switch to the puppy formula though. :thumbs up |
All 4 of mine eat Blue Buffalo Freedom grain free. You should still leave your baby on what the breeder is using for several weeks.until baby is settled in. New home, new family, new food could cause a tummy issue. Be sure to switch to new food slooooowly. |
I feed Blue as well- Eva actually likes it.. which is hard to get her to like a dry dog food. She has perfect stools too & no itching or anything. Works for us ! :) |
I am still feeding Hill's Science Diet for toy breeds as this was what Tara was eating when we got her. She is now 14mos. and seems to be doing okay. Anybody think she should be switched to something else and if so what? I am new to this site looks like I can learn all kinds of things. |

New puppy parents need to use extreme caution when switching their new pup's food...most breeders have this on their contract, to feed the same food for up to a year. You can switch when they are couple of months older, have gained a little weight & the food switch doesn't cause any digestive upset. Bc if it does, they stop eating & that causes low blood sugar, making them have a hypoglycemic attack. Bigger puppies, not so much, but Yorkie pups are so small, it's very common. There's one puppy that is very sick in the sick & injured forum bc of food change. |
Correction, it's in the health & diet. |

BB has a puppy version of the life protection formula for small breed puppies. Blue Buffalo - All Natural Small Breed Dog Food I had Rhett and Scarlett on it as puppies and they did beautifully on it. They transitioned to the adult version without any problems. Rhett has a very sensitive tummy and its one of the few foods he can tolerate. If you are going to make a change in formulas just do it slowly and you should be fine. |

Blue Buffalo Life Protection Dry Dog Food | Review and Rating If you have an adult formula, I would think that you could easily switch to a puppy formula with no problems. BTW, dogfoodadvisor gives Blue Buffalo Life Protection a four star rating, which is above average. |

We have had 2 yorkies and a beagle on various lines of Blue Buffalo (Life Protection, Wilderness, Basics) and all of them have done very well. I think this is one of the better choices at larger pet stores although it's kind of expensive (IMO) compared to other premium foods we've fed. |
Thanks to everyone who took the time to post their replies! I've decided to go ahead and get the puppy formula :) Hopefully she'll like it! |
I've been feeding my yorkie blue buffalo since she was a puppy (she will be 2 in november :). I had her on puppy formula and then switched over to small breed adult. I had researched a bunch of good dog foods and decided on blue buffalo. She seemed to be doing good with that until recently. I believe they changed their formula because I noticed the bag looked different but didn't think much of it. Lately she has been throwing up yellow foam and has been very itchy. I couldn't figure out what was wrong, I thought maybe she developed a food allergy. I started googling blue buffalo and came across a lot of complaints on consumeraffairs.com. I saw some other reviews saying their dog has been throwing up yellow foam as well. Needless to say, I will not be feeding her blue buffalo anymore! I would just be very cautious and be aware of any changes in your dog! |
