Weird fur growing in. I have a 15 week yorkie puppy. He's the first dog I've ever had, and I know his fur is going to change from his baby fur to another color, but the fur that seems to be growing in is... weird. Fluffy. Downy. A matted mess even though I attack him thoroughly with a brush multiple times a day. I have a slicker brush and a pin brush and a comb. I was wondering if there's an in-between weird stage or if this matted mess underneath is the adult fur that he will keep. I'm worried that it might pull at his skin if it gets worse; I'd basically have to shave him bald to get rid of it. He looks great if I don't part his fur and look at the root area, but if I do, I can't see skin, just a mess of tangles. Is it usual for the hair to be super extra thin in the between-stages of changing to adult fur, or is this just what his coat will be? Sorry if this has been discussed before, the search function on this forum seems to not work. |
Yorkie puppy coat can be fuzzy and tends to tangle. Also cotton coat Yorkies tend to tangle more than silk coats. Sometimes it is difficult to tell early on exactly what kind of coat a puppy will have as an adult. Do you have a picture you can share? |
If you have a mess of matting down deep, you probably should give a thought to having him shaved down. That can get really uncomfortable, and having them worked out would be ouch for him as well. Puppy coats are sooooo difficult. One of mine still has a cotton coat as an adult, it never did transition to a silk coat like it should have. For her own comfort, I keep her in a shorter cut. |
Sometimes it can be a nightmare as they're in transition. Use a good anti-tangling product. Spray on, let sit a few minutes. Work the matts with your fingers, then brush or comb to get out. I have found that a product called "The Stuff" works very well! |
Thanks for the replies. I don't have a camera that handles lighting well enough to get a pic. But your responses give me hope that he might transition out of it. That's good news. =) I will shave him down if it gets any worse, but I'm hoping not to have to do that permanently because he's terrified of clippers. I don't know why. He's pretty good about other things. |

Looks like he's got a nice thick coat & looks like a cotton coat but too early to tell how it will turn out. |
