Scratching My little guy has been very itchy lately. His flea meds are up to date. I have him groomed every 5 weeks or so and shampoo him in between with oatmeal soap. Tried giving him a bit of Benzedrine in his cheese, which now he has caught on to and will not eat it. The vet is not sure if it is the grass because or summer, maybe our outside cat or our boxer. But I have no idea what to do to make him feel better. Any suggestions?????? Thanks |
dog I would check to see if he needs to change his food to a hypoallergenic one. I had to give my poodle venison based food to get her skin healed up. Now fleas are out there. If you have a flea comb check to see if there are fleas. Dogs have allergies to fleas. Those the two biggies for itching. I would keep him out of the grass. That could be the problem. I had to find a dog dermatologist and that helped with my poodle. Oh perhaps the flea meds aren't working. My friend's dog had that problem. But you have to wait a month before applying new stuff. Some flea stuff just doesn't work. |
Thanks for the info. I have a feeling it is the grass. He is on blue (food) don't think that is the problem. He looks like he has bites but the groomer said there are no fleas. |
Sores on Tummy We just went through the sores on the tummy. Thought they were bites, but are actually from a food allergy. The vet had us change his food, and he got a yeast infection in his ears and sores on the tummy. Changed back to grain-free food and he's healing nicely. The sores look red and round and then dry up and turn dark. Is that what they look like? If so, start looking at food allergies. Also, a good way to treat the grass safely is to use Wal-Mart's brand of laundry detergent, X-Tra. Put it in an Ortho sprayer attached to the hose, Use at the lower settings and water the grass and bushes. You will be amazed at the mass exodus from the yard. The yorkie won't like it much, since everything smells like laundry ... but there will be no bugs! |
chester has enviromential allergies as well as the flea bites, so I know what your going through, I use no scent in laundry soap, no dryer sheets, and I have used the temaril p which is prednisone as well as antihistamine, if the antihistamine does not work it may be food related but benadryl does not work on all dogs my vet says, if it does work it is not food related |
You can trst for environmental allergies or do a med trial. |
My Princess has allergies & yeast (brown spots on tummy, brown gunk in itchy ears), was on temaril p for a short time. She had numerous skin cytologies done to confirm that it's yeast, it doesn't cost much to get tested (about $30). They do a skin scraping & look under the microscope. After watching this, I stopped giving her 'sugary' foods. Picked out a grain free kibble w/no potatoes & her brown spots & gunky itchy ears are no more! They were always on GF kibble, but it always had potato or sweet potato in it, also stopped all store bought treats. Now she's eating premade raw food for 1 meal & is doing excellent. The best part, she didn't need any more meds. Eating These Foods Can Cause Dog Yeast Infection I would also skip the oatmeal shampoo, dogs that are sensitive to grains might not do so well w/grain based shampoos. You might want to try something w/a coconut base. Princess was also prescribed RX shampoos but it didn't help much. The food change was the most dramatic difference for her. It's hard to keep her away from the grass when we're walking tho. |
