Mosquito Bites?? Poison Ivy?? Can dogs be reactive to mosquito bites or poison ivy?? My poor old man was miserable last night and he kept me up ALL night, telling me about it!! I wish i could have understood what he was saying or wanted, because we both might have gotten some sleep that way. I was looking through his fur and found 2 spots that are red and swollen up that look like mosquito bites...and 2 nights ago, he was going to town licking his foot. Both of my dogs seem itchy...but both are flea treated and other than the red spots where Princy has been itching, I can't find anything on them?!? Ricky did chase a squirrel into a tree the other day and into what may have been a poison ivy patch, but I'd think I'd catch it too from touching them since I am highly allergic. I did give them both Benadryl last night, but it didn't really seem to help!! |
I wonder if it was mosquito bites. |
Poor boy! Sounds more like bug bites of some kind. Poison ivy would spread fast with scratching and licking and produce much more than a couple of bumps. Although they are on flea preventatives, could still be fleas. Check their coats and skin closely. I would check in with the vet. When Teddy had a spider bite, he was given a topical spray to reduce the itching and swelling. Our doctor said we could use it on some other bug bites that he got later. Worked very well to end the itchiness. I'm not sure if there is anything over the counter that is safe to use on pets. When I tried organic coconut oil on Teddy's bites, it didn't do much. |
I've got an appointment scheduled on Friday for Princeton's "episodes," but I am thinking I may have to get in earlier. I did try benedryl last night and then prednisone(which he has for allergies) today because the benedryl didn't seem to do much. I also applied a small amount of apple cider vinegar and water to the bites. Tomorrow I am going to use some anti-itch shampoo. Both of the boys seem a little itchy, but I can't see anything...other than the 2 red welts on Princeton and the places where they've itched themselves red. I am hoping it's just bug bites and allergies!! |
Update: So I decided to move the appointment with the vet up to today because I'd tried everything~prednisone, benedryl, apple cider vinegar...and yesterday I gave both of the boys a bath with anti-itch shampoo and then at bedtime, I put hydrocortizone cream on the itchy spots and then put t-shirts and diapers on so they couldn't lick the spots....and they still were itchy!! The vet says she thinks they have some kind of allergy...possibly a flea allergy. She gave me more prednisone an she said it was going to take a few days to take effect. I can't wait until it does....the itching is driving us nuts!! |
I hope they can get some relief soon from the itchies. Is your pup on prednisone regularly/daily? To the best of my knowledge, it is not something that can be given sporadically, or on an as needed basis. It has to be tapered off. |
We are tapering off the Prednisone. 2x daily...down to 1x daily...down to 1 every other day. He doesn't seem to be itching as much, but he is panting up a storm while at rest. The vet said it could be a side effect of the Prednisone or possibly just the hot weather. |
