Mold on dog treat Ok so I had Callie's training treats out that I bought at the same time I picked up her supplement about a week and a half ago and I went to pull out one of the treats and I am pretty sure it has a pretty large spot of mold on it my grandma thinks its mold too. Do I write the company or do I take them back to where I bought them? Can mold make dogs sick? I break the treats into small pieces and didn't notice any other mold spots on any she had before I pulled out the moldy one. |
Notify the company immediately. And yes, mold can make them sick. |
We had mold get in Purina Dog Chow as well as Purina Sewwt Feed for horses years ago....there were dogs that died eating that mold in that food....and a lot of sick horses.....I would contact the company that manufactured the treats and let them know, ask them what they want you to do about this....then contact the store where you purchased the product. |

I am real funny about smells...I smell EVERYTHING....I was smelling a freshly opened bag of sweet feed...couldnt see anything on the feed, but it did not smell right....so we did not feed it....others in the barn did feed it, and by the end of the week, we had 6 horses down with colic. So the mold can be growing in the product, but just not "flowering" so you can not see the actual mold spores. |

What treats were they? |
There are all different kinds of mold, and it may be a harmless mold.....like pennicillin mold on bread wont hurt you.....unless you are allregic to pennicillin maybe? Did you save the piece with the mold on it? The vet MAY be able to recognize it...the dog food company will most definately want to test it to see what kind it is....alot of dog food boasts "no preservatives"....well, this is what happens when you have no preservatives.....moisture content in the dog food, sitting on the shelf, and you will get mold! Dont give your baby any more of the treats (of course you wouldnt!!), I very seriously doubt the little amount of mold your baby MAY have gotten, is going to affect her.....depending on what the mold is, determines the symptoms....probably would be looking at GI upsets...... |
Callie just threw up yellow foam! She ran outside after that and went poo poo it was a very normal poo. She would not eat this morning/ afternoon. Could it have taken this long for it to upset her stomach? |
I would get something in her stomach.. Boiled chicken- mixed with a little water. |

I will look up symptoms for you. Some molds will be harmless, others are not. Careful if the company wants the bag of treats for testing. You may want to retain some of them and the packaging or they could just get rid of them and sweep this under the rug. If she does get sick it wouldn't hurt to send some fir testing yourself. you can Google the treat name to look up other incidences if there are any. I'd personally ask the get what signs to look for if you are rairly convinced it is mold. Best to notify/show the store, but that in itself is not enough bc some 29-something year old manager may just ignore you. |
When moldy treats are recalled the GI tract seems to be the things companies warn about. Here is the ASPCA lust: Foods That Are Hazardous to Dogs | ASPCA Scroll down to moldy foods. It was probably benign, but my concern is that we can't say that for sure. What I am going to say won't be popular. but I'll say it tor the pups. These companies with equipment to dry out treats properly still have problems getting it right. This is why treats made at home and sold online aren't fed to my pups. Uf a comoany can't always get it right I doubt a person using a home oven dan consistently either. We don't buy no name treats and such. Too risky. |
