I think I forgot... I think I forgot to give Buster and Maggie their Heartgard on the first of August. I usually give it to them on the first day of every month and record it on the calendar. However, with Buster having his knee surgery on 7/26 and taking care of him, working, etc., I think I forgot. There isn't a note on the calendar. I'm almost certain I did not give them a dose. DH is running around the house all freaked out telling me not to poison HIS dogs (seriously?). I hate to think they went without protection because I was forgetful and not paying attention. I don't know whether to give them a dose now or wait until next month. |
So sorry Jeanie, but I am sitting here laughing out loud about your husband. :p At this time of the year, I would not want to mess around with it. You can call the EC and ask...I am sure they would answer this question. OR maybe Heartgard has a number to call?? I had a pup snatch one from another AFTER he had eaten his one month. I called the vet and they told me there was no problem. When we get pups in rescue we don't know if they have had a Heartgard recently...I am sure at some time or another some have been double dosed. From my understanding it is not a problem; but don't just take my word for that. Call the above numbers. Ohhhh I know a vet I can message on FB...if he is around and answers, I will message you on FB. |
Merial is closed. I just called. It just hit me that you will probably be ok until Monday. Usually a two week period is ok to miss.....I would wait and call the vet if you cannot get an answer before then. |
Maybe an all natural mosquito repellant sprays until you can find out for sure....my vet carries some stuff and I keep it on hand for just such a situation! |
It should be given. Very safe and much better than risking a month off. You do not wantto exceed 45 days without giving it. Some mte infections require daily ivermectin. Not going to hurt. |
What I do is to date each pill packet as soon as I get it with a permanent marker. I then just pop the pill out, but leave the foil packet attached. That way I know whether or not it was given. I also put the reminder stickers on our calendar and check it off when the pill is given. Food for thought. :-) |

When you bought the pills, how many months did you buy? You can count the number used and figure it out from the purchase month. |
Could use Capstar until it is safe to dose with the flea stuff again. |
Give the dose now, don't wait. Even if you had given it on Aug 1st, another dose will not hurt them according to my vet. I worried once that Tiki spit hers out and Meika grabbed it, on top of already having her own. The vet told me no prob, just very expensive treats. |

OK so what if its past the 45 days or 30...is it harmful to still give dose? does testing need to be redone? |

Depending on the test done it can take six months to show a positive after infection. So testing right away probably won't show anything even if something is there and it would be unsafe to stop the drug for six months. So you should continue to give it. I'm about three weeks late giving E her Interceptor (keep forgetting :( ). She will get it tonight. |
my vet tested Morgan for heartworm before I started him on it for the first time and the she will do it every 2 years because we only treat for 6 months in Montana until the first hard freeze |
