(Bordetella) - How contagious is it? Hi, does anyone here have had some experience with this cough? Yesterday I brought my yorkie over to my friend's house who has a Boxer with Canine Cough (Bordetella). The boxer has been on anti biotics and hasn't cough since and Monday and is recovering quite well. But my friend freaked out and forgot to tell me and said that it's very contagious and that her dog the Boxer is still highly contagious. They were only in the for about 1.5 hrs and the Boxer went up and sniff mine couple times but that was it. They just sat in the same room for that short amount of time until she told me and I took him out to my car right away. So do you guys know if that short time was enough to my Benny to get (Bordetella)? I hope not.... |
kennel cough My vet said that kennel cough is highly contagious and is airborne bacteria from coughing and sneezing. It can be caught from contaminated surfaces also. Symptoms usually start in a few days from exposure. I hope your baby will be OK. |
It is pretty contagious. When I brought Cali home she had kennel cough and gave it to my older pomeranian. Just watch her for any sign of a cough. Hopefully she will be ok. |
I'm not an expert in Bortedella, but in humans at least, you are generally no longer considered contagious once you've been on antibiotics for at least 24 hours. How old is your baby? Are his vaccines up to date? When in doubt, give your vet a call. |

They said it's best to just wait to see if my does get 1st, then they can administer the proper anti-biotics. I'm praying in that 1.5 hrs they were in the same room was not enough for the virus to spread, god I'm praying. :hands: |
Hopefully the short exposure will not result in Benny catching it. Cali and Maya were together 24/7 and Maya was old. From what I understand antibiotics are only given to help prevent it from going into pneumonia. It just has to run it's course. |
