Luma's vet apt & won't take her pills! Alrighty, yesterday I brought Luma to the vet for the upteenth time for her allergies. They first did a skin scraping a couple weeks back and it was negative for ear mites. That eliminates the possibility of an outside parasite allergen. No fleas either but I do not and will not put her on flea meds, only HW. Trying to rule out food allergy vs. environmental has been hell on her :( Breaks my heart. Food trials are a PAIN and we've had to start over several times due to her licking Rosie's food bowl or finding something on the floor to eat. Anyway, she's on an RX Royal Canin hydrolyzed, hypoallergenic food for the next 12 weeks and was prescribed 4 different medications that she has to take for the next 6 weeks. If the food isn't doing it, she'll have to do the allergy testing. Anyway just wanted to update a little for anyone who has read about her allergy problems she's been dealing with from the start. Also she REFUSES to take her pills. I don't know what to do. She's never given me any trouble, she's super obedient and has never fought with me before! I can't put the pills inside cheese or peanut butter or yogurt because she's on a food trial and it breaks the moment she eats anything else, and we'd have to start over. Any suggestions? |
Ask your vet if the pills can be crushed and mixed in with any canned food she is on. Another option might be to crush the pills and dissolve them in a little water and use a syringe to give it to her. Please talk to your vet first, not all medications are appropriate for being given this way. Anything time released or enteric coated would be contraindicated. |

Prayers for Luma |

I hope you find out what is causing this with Luma. Sending out good thoughts to you both |
I would also see if she would take her pill if it was wrapped in a soft treat of some kind. We are puppy sitting right now and one of the pups needs to have her pills wrapped in a soft chewy treat and then she takes it just fine. Please let us know what you decide to do. Sending prayers for your pup and for you!! |
Poor Luma. I hope you can get to the bottom of what is making her itch. I agree with the pill syringe idea if you can crush up the pills. With Teddy, I have to pop the pill to the back of his tongue and hold his mouth shut until he swallows. Sometimes it takes a couple of attempts. |
Tatiana doesn't take pills at all. My vet always crushes and mixes her pills with sterile water. I am given a syringe to measure it and squirt into her mouth. |
Bless her heart. She has always had such a fit with her allergies. Praying for answers to be found so she'll feel better. Yeah, if they cannot be crushed, I would look into that pill popper thing. It shoots the pill back into their throat and they just have to swallow it. Give her an extra hug and kiss from me and Mandie. |
Callie can not be tricked with pills she can eat anything around the pill and spit it out. When she had her knee surgery Tramadol was prescribed for her and I told the vet tech I absolutely can not get her to take it due to the bitter taste so she gave me a pill shooter. It sounds bad but it really is not it doesn't shoot the pill it just drops in down the back of there throat. If you get one though it is very important to get one with a rubber tip because with out the rubber you could really hurt them. Have you talked to your vet about the varl (I think that whats its called) allergy testing? A few people on here have gotten it and had great success. |
Oh no Carmen. I’m just seeing this. Darn what a mess!! Ugh I feel for you and for sweet Luma, I know she has been dealing with this for awhile now. Poor girl. It is so hard seeing them itchy and miserable. Hmm Can you get the pills in liquid form? If not sometimes you just have to force them.. Honestly as much as it sucks have Tony hold her, you open her mouth throw the pill down her throat and shut it immediately. Hole her mouth shut- tight. Then rub her throat up and down, it will make her swallow. We did this to dogs/ cats who hated taking pills, it was the only thing that worked. |
I wrap Daisy's pills in low fat cream cheese...works like a charm:) |
The pill popper does help, after you pop it in, close her mouth, hold tight and rub her throat.. it should work- you might get the stink eye for a little after, but hey at least she is getting her meds. I think your inner tech needs to come out :D |
