Foods I have read that there are several things that you can give your yorkie for a treat. Are these things really acceptable? 1) Plain yogurt 2) Carrots 3) Celery 4) Cottage Cheese Also, are there any more suggestions? I want to give my puppy a variety! :p |
Yes those things are good. You can also give carrots and cherios |
you should try a bunch of different things to see what your yorkie likes as well. for instance, my puppy won't eat cherrios, carrots, peanut butter, or american cheese. but he's wild over mozzarella and cottage cheese. |
I think as long as it's not fatty or salty most things are all right. I've heard that grapes, onions, avocado and chocolate are not good things to give, so to be safe stay away. My boys eat all kinds of fruit and veggies, when I'm chopping them for the bird they sit there and wait for their share :p ... |
Also, stay away from Rasins and things with ANY sugar..it can rot their teeth! Carrots and are big hit at my house. |

Pixie usually gets a small sampling of whatever we happen to be eating. She loves dry cereal (usually Cherios or Rice Chex), bits of whatever meat happens to be on our plate, small bits of cheese, carrots, apples, the list goes on.... The key is moderation. You don't want her getting SO many treats that she stops eating her regular food (or starts to get chunky!) I would probably try to make a mental note of any foods that can be toxic to our pups. Here's a good list of what NOT to feed: Foods to Avoid They have potato listed on there though... I thought only the green parts of the tater were toxic.... or was I wrong? Edited: Oops, wait, I think I read it wrong, it says potato, ruhbarb and tomato leaves and stems Dairy is listed on there too, but I'm always giving Pixie a lick or two of my yogurt or cottage cheese (and I know a lot of other people do too!) Maybe they just mean it's bad if given in large quantities.... |
:( I feel like such a bad Mommy!! I had no idea some of these things are bad for my baby...Why is it that dog foods contain some of these items, such as Potatoes and garlic if this is bad for your furbaby why do they add it? I am outragged! :eek: |
Actually a lot of things that one list might say are bad for a dog will not be on the next list you read. There certainly are potatoes in a lot of good dog foods. I feed my dogs dry dog food (which they hate) ---and a variety of human safe foods. They get a balanced diet and not too much of any one type of food. I don't feed my dogs junk food (fries, candy, salty foods, chips, cookies, cake or foods like that). I also do not give them alcohol, coffee, tea, chocolate, avacodos, grapes, raisens, etc. But - you should know that my little Yorkie ate a bunch of grapes tonight. It didn't hurt him (he had them hours ago) - but I have read on many lists that they are bad for dogs. I am sure my dogs eat a lot of things that aren't especially good for them, but they eat these foods rarely and not in large amounts. I really try to give them a lot of different foods and not a lot of any one food. Carol Jean |
I knew chocolate and grapes were dangerous to all dogs but I never realized it was good to feed people food to them. Now I am confused. When I first got Chloe (4 months ago) she did not adapt well to my water (she was used to well water) so I had to use bottled water for a time and she would not eat her puppy food. I HAD to mix cooked chicken with hot water & dry food just to get her to eat! Once I gradually eliminated the chicken and got her down to plain dry, I tried treating her to a piece of chicken and she then refused to eat her dry food all that day! Needless to say I stopped treating her to chicken. Is it not good to only give her the dry puppy food? Also the breeder I purchased her from, instructed me to use Velvetta Lite diced up for her treats. She said it had a salty content and would make her want more water. It constapated her (I think), so I stopped that as well - Now I just use a small sliver of a soft dog treat while training & rewarding. I don't want to short change her and am worried now after reading so many other Yorkie's get a more diversified diet :eek: |
Thanks Kelly Thanks for the link to the toxic foods. I sent a link to my parents (Grandbitch and Grandpaw) :D because they "Baby"sit often and they love to give treats. Once Grandpaw said Baby got a hold of a grape on the floor and ate it. I almost had a :love: attack! She was fine that God. They better read the site! |
