My puppy has fleas :( I have a 10 week old yorkie and I think she has fleas. :( She is very itchy and I even have a couple bites on me. She is our only pet. She may have got them from our yard or from a family members dog. What do you recommend me using to get rid of these fleas? |
I would talk to your vet about what to use on a puppy. I think you can use Frontline Plus but I don't know what the dose would be. Also giving a bath in Dawn dish soap would kill the fleas on her. |
vacum and lots of it and wash bedding and such, get a flea comb and maybe capstar you can use on a puppy , im not sure it is a one time thing for only a day or so to kill fleas quick. Yhe dawn would kill them, do not use flea shampoo to many chemicals in it |

Your pup is old enough for Frontline, but still check with your vet. You can use dish soap to get them off her right away, but without flea preventative they'll just jump back on. Keep puppy shampoo and conditioner too so her coat/skin doesn't get too dry. If their bitting you you'll also need wash all bedding and stuff. You can also get some Hot Shot flea spray, and use it in carpeted areas, then vacuum over. |
I would skip the dish soap and just use regular shampoo. Put a ring of shampoo around the neck first, then wet down the rest of your pup and apply shampoo generously. Work in the shampoo and let it sit for a minute or two before rinsing thoroughly. Vacuum your entire home daily, every nook and cranny and under furniture. Wash everything that can be washed as often as possible. Fleas lay eggs quickly, the eggs hatch about a week later perpetuating the cycle. As suggested above, talk to your bet about flea preventatives. If your vet approves Frontline, you don't have to apply the whole dose. I split the smallest dose between my big boys. Your vet may also prescribe something to help with the itchy, sore skin. |
I have a 10 week old and I have treated my carpets with a good flea spray that kill eggs and larvae, we sprayed our yard with Ortho Max and a hose sprayer, (keep the puppy inside till it drys). Then I bathed all our dogs and rinsed in diluted Avon Skin So Soft and towel dried them. Seems to be working so far. Will probably spray the carpet again in a week to make sure we break the cycle. Skin So Soft doesn't have all the chemicals the flea preventatives do and lasts about a week, time for the next bath. Helps with any dry skin problems too. |

I had a quart Gatorade bottle. Put about 1/3 cup SSS and then filled it with water. Also put some in a little squirt bottle. Has sort of a woodsy scent and articles on internet say fleas don't like it. Anyway I prefer doing something like this more often than using chemicals. SSS is supposed to be OK for human babies so I figure it is OK. We have lost 2 dobermans and one lab from cancer and although I don't have proof I can't help but believe all the chemicals we put on our animals contributes to it. So if I can manage this new little Yorkie baby without using something natural I sure am going to try. Also starting her on Wellness dog food. My last Yorkie had flea allergy and lots of skin problems. Going to try to avoid corn and wheat for this one. |

I always use dawn, it kills the fleas so if you miss some when grooming. They are dead. Plus it is safe for pet. I actually use a dawn with baking soda as their normal pet shampoo. Super cheap and ph balanced for skin plus no harsh chemicals as some pet shampoos. Then use good quality conditioner. |

I also use aveno skin so soft bath oil as a repellent on my dogs and horse. |
There is a SSS with chemicals and one that is just bath oil. You have to make sure you get the one that doesn't have bug repellant in it. |
Well, they use Dawn on all the wildlife including baby birds and ducks etc. I would think it is safe. I have always used baby shampoo on my yorkies. |
