Couvers BUN Levels are Elevated
 
Couver went in for his annual exam today and had bloodwork, urinalysis and fecal done. Everything came out normal except his BUN levels. The vet said they were elevated, and that they were elevated last time too (I don't remember them saying anything last time...).

I'm concerned. She says it could be due to dehydration or a high protein diet. We are going to test again when he goes in for his dental, but I am worried.

Does anyone have any experience with elevated levels? I've been doing a bit of googling, but was hoping someone here had some advice. I just want to make sure I'm doing what is best for him...

I have no advise for you, sorry, but I am saying a prayer for Couver....please be alright little man...mommy is worried.

Katie's were slightly elevated last summer, but our vet wasn't very concerned. He tested her urine afterwards, and he said everything was fine. He seemed very happy that I told him ushe wasn't drinking enough when we were playing outside, and I understood why when I learned the elevated levels could be caused by dehydration or a high protein diet. Once I read that, I was less worried, but still I was very relieved with the results of her urine test.

I have read in other dog breed forums about elevated BUN results for dogs on high protein diets. Some people were concerned and changed diets, while others contended that there is a different "normal" for dogs on higher protein diets.

Hoping Couver's is normal when he is re-tested.

I'm so sorry to hear this and hope they can get it all figured out. Maybe a retest or more tests will be normal. Is your baby actually on a high protein diet or suspected to be dehydrated at the time of the test? If not, did the vet say what else could cause it? Praying for Couver to be fine.

I'd be concerned too with BUN elevations in a young dog. I'll keep Couver in my thoughts. I probably wouldn't rest with the "we'll test next time" thing, and would take it further.

It has been over 100 degrees the past week, so it is very possible he is dehydrated. We play fetch out in the yard, but haven't been going to the park because it has been too hot. I don't see him drink as much as Khloe, so I wouldn't be surprised if he was dehydrated. Would wet food help with dehydration?

As for high protein, he eats Acana Grasslands and very occasionally gets Wellness Pure Rewards grain free treats.

Dudley had an elevated count too. I don't think the vet seemed too worried. She told me to feed him a senior food. He won't eat it so I have began to feed him more kibble in the morning and canned at nite. Hope your baby is fine. They can really worry you.

I hope it is just that Couver's hi levels are from dehydration. Actually wet food works great to help with dehydration. You can also add a little water in the dry food too. I have been doing that with Galen. It has just been too hot and like you I don't see him drinking as much as I think he should

I hope your pup is ok, which I'm sure he will be.

I agree with Cathy that I would not wait a year to retest ...it may be the heat and simply not getting enough liquids ..if so retesting will show that. But..if he was a bit night last year a pattern is showing and could be a concern.


I have a lasha who has kidney issues, I had to change his diet and supplements. So far so good....just do your research about diet IMO

I'm not waiting a year, his dental is in a couple months... But I'm considering taking him back to retest within the next couple days. I just don't know how much will have changed if I take him back so quickly.

I have had elevated BUN readings from feeding too much spinach so diet can play a role. If he's having the dental soon, just retest then. I wouldn't run out to retest in a few days. Usually if BUN is up by a point or two, my vet will say something like "insignificant" if the rest of the blood work is unremarkable.

The vet called to check on Couver after his annual and I asked what exactly his levels were. They said normal is between 7-27 and his was 31. So it sounds like it's not super high, but we will be testing again in a couple months.

I have introduced wet food for breakfast and dinner and am mixing his kibble, wet and water together to make more of a soup. He loves it, so hopefully this will help with dehydration, if that is what is causing it. It's been reallllly hot here lately and he is not very good at staying calm outside (he loves to play fetch as much as possible), so I have been keeping him inside more as well.

Keeping Couver and you in my thoughts and prayers. Its extremely hot here in the south, too. After reading this thread, I started adding water to Jasper's food yesterday. He doesn't drink much either.

Please keep us updated on the next test results and good luck with his dental.

Oh sweet Couver. I am hoping he will get good test results. Some dog foods are high in protein and I would check the bag to see how high. I bet Couver is loving the wet food. I mix water and wet with my boys food and they wolf it down.

chester eats the acana chicken and potato and he drinks alot, something in this dog food makes him drink alot

Sorry I missed this when you 1st posted...so happy that Couver is doing better, hope he continues to get well. Is he on an all kibble diet? It might be better to moisten his kibble w/water. See if that changes things for the better...moisture is good for their kidneys too.
