Vaccine guidelines changing again? Just found out we are probaby going to start doing them every 5 years instead of every 3. Can't find the source of the new protocol yet. Interesting though. Apparently vets were taking the every 3 year thing as literally every 3 years when the hope was to do it every 3 at the very most. |
Is this just for Michigan or is it nationwide? I find it strange that different states have different laws requiring shots, like rabies, yet a dog can travel across the country and not have to show any documentation at borders. |
This would be for DHPP, not rabies. I'm not sure when other hospitals will implement it, but my guess is that if our office is doing it, a major veterinary organization is backingthe switch. That would be at the national level. |

Even AAHA was saying they helieve 5 years is protective. The charts that are sideways at the abive page is probably the start of the five year thing. still won't be giving to Ellue, but it is nice for those that feel like they have to follow a schedule. |

I have the receipt from Max's rabies vaccine visit sitting on our kitchen counter to remind me to schedule the appt for the DHP. When I looked at it a couple nights ago, I was annoyed that the reminders listed a couple of extra letters to include Lepto and something else. I have never given him the Lepto vaccine. Our doctor knows me better though. :D |

Here in Clinton Co. Indiana, it's law that our dogs are vaccinated every year. The only reason I can think of is because the county is a huge pork producer. I haven't given the five of mine any shots for the last two years. The vets around here won't even sell flea and heartworm if their shots are not current. |

Unfortunately, it seems pretty likely that the new schedule we may implement will not be widespread, In other words, I wouldn't hold out for your vets to switch. It is a major move and without the AAHA soecifically releasing guidelines about it, there is no way most offices will go to 5 years when they just went to 3. But you could take that above posted document and show them the minimum 5 year DOI thing. OR you can do what I do...choose your own schedule and do what you want.:p Please be careful though. I see some do what they want but they are doing it incorrectly and putting their dogs at risk. |

Any recommendations on titering frequency? I paid $242 to titer for Rabies and another $142 to titer for Pavro and distemper. I don't do Bordatella unless I absolutely must. |
Good to know. I truly hope this works out as those shots back when I had Jilly sure made her feel bad for the day and she always had a lump on her withers for months afterward! |

Here is what my vet said. Some of her clients *always* give Benadryl 45min-1 hour prior to any vaccines - and in her 25 years as a vet, she has never, ever had an animal who had benadryl react to a vaccine. So if you're really worried, maybe give Benadryl to help alleviate that fear. |

Pup came in a few months ago. Was premeded with Benadryl. Still reacted (but had history of reacting). You can ask about giving it orally beforehand. Would save $$$ if you want to give it. |
Ellie May, Is there any study about whether or not pre-administration of Benadryl has any adverse effect on the efficacy of vaccinations? I ask because there are some human studies that suggest dampening the immune response (in people cases, fever) in children may decrease the effectiveness of the vaccines and as a result many pediatricians are recommending that kids not be given Tylenol until their fever reaches greater than 38.5 C. |
