Rimadyl side effects? Winnie dislocated her knee cap last night. My doctor put her on Rimadyl for pain for a week before she decides on the need for surgery. I gave her her first dose around noon today and just gave her her second. I noticed about 2 hours ago that she is drink FAR more water then she normally does. As in in one sitting she drank an entire bowl. I looked up to see if this could be a side effect of the medication but couldn't find anything. Has anyone experienced this with this medication? Or is it possibly a symtom of something more serious going on with her injury? I know that it's hot out and I should be happy she is drinking but this is a drastic difference then normal. I think I may be a worrying mother. . . help please! :aimeeyork |
If the excess drinking only happened after the pill, then I'd chalk it up to that and probably wouldn't worry too much - although a call to your vet never hurts, just to be sure and to put your mind at ease. Lots of times, dry mouth improves over time with any med that causes it, so maybe give it a few days. |
Google side effects for rimadyl. Some are very serious. I knew a woman whose dog had taken rimadyl and had serious stomach issues that took several months to repair. The dog almost died. I will not give rimadyl to my dogs. I tell the vet to give me something else which they will do. |
My female was prescribed Rimadyl and also had insatiable thirst. Thirst is one thing but insatiable thirst is something else. I agree with Wylie's Mom that a quick call to your vet is best. They will probably reduce the dosage or change the meds which is what they did for my female. Insatiable thirst from Rimadyl can be an allergic reaction to the medication. I also agree meds do cause dry mouth. I don't know how large Winnie's bowl is but a puppy drinking an entire bowl of water in one sitting is cause for that vet phone call. Winnie just needs an adjustment in her meds and I am sure will be fine. |
I would check with the vet too |
Here's the prescribing info. Change in drinking habits is one of the side effects... http://www.fda.gov/downloads/AnimalV.../UCM050408.pdf |
We were given that pill as well! I don't like it. It makes her stomach upset - we only give her a half of a pill as needed. Kiki has a luxating patella and vet said surgery was needed asap. I never scheduled it since after the dislocation that sent us to the vet she has only showed a sign of pain once since. I didn't want to jump into surgery if she didn't have to have it. |
That is why my vet had us wait a week. When she went back the improvement shown made my vet decide to put off surgery. She said she wants to wait to have surgery until it is causing her constant pain and she can not bare it. I asked if this would cause anything bad to happen to wait she said no. She did say it is inevitable that she will have to have it but that there is no point to put her through surgery till she MUST have it. Plus that gives me some time to save up. |
