Losing Puppy Teeth to Neuter? I know I should just ask my vet but I forgot while I was there and they're busy over the phone so I figured I'd ask here until I could get ahold of them. Is there a reason they want my puppy to lose all his puppy teeth before they'll neuter him? They said they want to surgically remove his puppy molars so they can neuter him but it's like $100 a tooth! So I was wondering if it's absolutely necessary for him to be rid of all his puppy teeth before they'll perform the surgery? |
Well usually they should lose most of their teeth before neutering. They put them under once then neuter and remove any remaining puppy teeth. Galen was fixed last week at 8 weeks. They told me there'd might be maybe 4 teeth . . Well there was 17 ! . . . 4 canine, 2 molars and rest mix. I am in NY. I did not pay by the tooth. The extractions were $75 for all 17 and my vet is one of the more pricey vets. I would check out a different vet. That is way too much IMO |
It's best to wait so that you can do both at the same time, and you give the teeth a chance to fall out on their own. Your vets charges to pull the baby teeth are highly unreasonable. Teri, before you get any backlash from your last post, I'll add that Galen was almost eight months and not eight weeks when he was neutered and had his remaining baby teeth pulled. i hope all goes well with your baby's neuter. |
My boy was neutered at 6 months. I didn't know about retained teeth, at 8 months three of his baby teeth had not fallen out. He had two sets of canines, baby and adult. I had to put him under again to pull the retained teeth. It cost $100 for anesthesia and $17 per tooth. With my new pup, I am waiting until he is 8 months old to neuter so I can do it all at once. |
You want to wait as long as you can to give all of the baby teeth a chance to fall out on their own. Some, despite a long wait, will NEVER fall out on their own and will have to be removed and that requires anesthesia. If you get that done at the time of neuter, then they will only have to be put under once, which decreases risk for your boy and saves you money. You are going to have to judge whether or not you have waited long enough. With mine, I waited until she was 8 months. Her upper canines were still there, and her jaw was long enough to accommodate both the adult and puppy canines. I could see as the new puppy teeth came in that the puppy teeth were readily pushed out, but these were just not loose or budging, so I decided it was time. To encourage the baby teeth to fall out, you can give him toys to chew on and play tug of war with rope toys. While retained baby teeth are common in toy breeds, not all have trouble losing all of them. Out of 7 toy dogs I've had throughout my life, only 2 had retained teeth that needed to be removed, and in both cases they were the upper canines. $100 per tooth does seem excessive. |
They probably want him to lose as many as he can before he is neutered because then they will only have to pull a few teeth. When you neuter him you will want all baby teeth that have not fallen out pulled so he doesn't have to go back under in a few months to have them pulled. |
