Constipation Hi everyone, it's been a while since I have been on here, I started a new job and busy, busy, busy!! I'm hoping someone can offer some good advice, Mia is 8 mths old and weighs about 4 lbs, I switched her food to Royal Canine Yorkie Puppy about a month ago, I've been noticing that she isn't pooping a lot and I think she may be constipated, has anyone else had these issues with Royal Canine and also what to give her for the constipation!! Thanks!! |
A change in diet can significantly change pooping habits for a few reasons, including changes in protein percentage, calories, and ingredients. Sometimes it is for the better and sometimes not. What food was she eating before? How often did she poop a day on the previous diet, and how often does she go now that she is eating RC? Does she have any symptoms of constipation -- discomfort, distended and firm belly, difficulty when she does poop? |
She doesn't have any abdominal distention or any sign of discomfort, her poop is just firm and occasionally gets stuck to her bottom (if that makes any sense) she isn't eating as much of the RC as she was the previous food, I believe it was All Natural Lamb Flavor, is it possible that the previous food just had more fillers and thus she ate more and then pooped more, I don't know, now I'm starting to sound like a crazy Yorkie mom obsessed with my pups poop! Hahaha!! |
Being obsessed with poop is a prerequisite for Yorkie moms. :D The lamb food probably did not have more fillers, but may have been higher in protein/fat/calories, causing more frequent poops. You can look up this info on the internet to compare the foods' percentages. The fact that she is eating less may also be the reason for the fewer poops. Having it get stuck to her rear end is a little concerning and may indicate she is slightly dehydrated. This all could have coincided with warmer temperatures too. Usually firmer poops are more desirable, but too firm is undesirable. |
Fruitables is a prebiotic fiber supplement that will help regulate you little angel's GI. I also highly recommend probiotics such as Microflora. |
You can also add a little plain canned pumpkin in the food. It will help with constipation. |

Jess eats royal canin and goes about twice a day, not soft but not hard . she was on eukanuba when I got her and barely went at all. Give it a couple months until her system gets used to it. Its a good food |
