Gillykat | 07-04-2013 03:15 PM | I had my first dog at 12 years old and we always get our girls spayed :) Over the years we've had crossbreeds, jack Russell terriers, yorkies, whippets and border collies.
My last one to be done was Tina Whippet in 2008. She went in at 8.30am and we had to phone the surgery at 3.30 to see how she was and pick her up at 5pm. She had a neat operation site on her tummy and was very drowsy for the rest of the evening (the vets had given her some pain relief which would last until the next day) so I brought a mattress into the living room and just read a book rather than watch tv so she could have a quiet evening in with me to sleep the remains of the anaesthetic off. At 11pm I took her out for a 5-minute walk to have a pee and we then went to bed. I slept on the sofa so I was near her during the night :) She slept all the way through and was a LOT brighter the next morning and I gave her a breakfast of scrambled egg. She'd had a tiny amount of food the evening before but was obviously still feeling groggy so wasn't too bothered....I just made sure she had a drink of water.
She didn't need her big collar (Elizabethan collars they're called in UK) as she didn't bother with her stitches at all  In fact, I've never had a bitch who DID bother with them.
The vets had told me she was only allowed short walks ON THE LEAD for the next 10 days but after 2 days Tina was going demented as she loved to gallop :p I DID stick to the rules though and told her it was all for her own good!!!
She had a check-up at the vets 48 hours after the op just to make sure everything was healing ok and she was eating/drinking etc. Then another check-up after 10 days to make sure she was ok to be allowed more exercise :) Everything was ok so she was allowed a run on the beach to give her the chance to stretch out after her 'confinement' on the lead and that took the tickle out of her feet :D
As with all my previous girls we NEVER had a problem after the operation and their personality never changed and, most importantly, they did NOT get fat which is what a lot of folks still say is caused by neutering  Lack of exercise and too much food and treats cases dogs, spayed or not, to get fat....not the actual operation.
I'm sure Buttons will sail through her op and it'll be YOU who feels it more ;) We always worry....it's only natural....but I've always had my girls (and boys!) done and, to me, it's just one day of very slight discomfort in 15+ years of life with you....she'll be fine (((HUGS))) |
