Gonna have Emmylou spayed I have an appointment for blood work to have my baby fixed. Emmy Lou is 5 months old and I am not going to breed her. Is 5 months a good time for this ? When is the best time and what can I do to make this experience not to bad for her? |
I just discussed this with my vet today......depending on their size, it can be done any where between 6 months - 1 yr. Mine prefers to do it before the first heat. Generally small dogs come into heat a little later than 6 months. I am going to wait until Tatiana is around 8 or 9 months to have her spay. Teeka was 8 months and she did great and she did not come in heat. Talk to your vet about the best time as this may differ. Always get a full blood panel before the spay to make sure there are no underlying medical issues. I hope this helps and I am sure others will chime in with more advice. :) |
If it were me, I'd wait until after the first heat for a couple of reasons. I have read that it's best to wait for the growth plates to close. Secondly, Emmy Lou will probably need to have a few baby teeth pulled that don't fall out on their own. Small dogs are known for this, and I'd prefer not having to put them under anesthesia twice. I'm glad that you are doing blood work. It's great as a preventative, but its also good to have it as a baseline for the future. I'd definitely ask for pain medication for your little girl. Some people buy infant onesies and put them on backwards. The tail will come out where the snaps are. This will help Emmy Lou because it will stop her from biting her incision. I'd also get her a soft collar to use instead of the hard ones that the vet sells. YT member Bo, Mom to Hotrod, sells them. The link below is her website. They are great to have. I got mine when my Rainbow Bridge baby, Ashley, was sixteen. I thought it would be good to have just in case. I used it when I cut her nails. I hope all goes smoothly with Emmy Lou and that she brings you a lifetime of joy, love, and laughter. The Kiss-E Collar |
If I were to get another young female, I would spay at 5 or 6 months of age. There is plenty of research that indicates that if you spay before the first heat the pup has a zero chance of mammary tumors. There are also many other health concerns you will avoid. There are many, many studies on this and lots of information all over the web. I adopted my Pippi when she was 10 months old and she had already been spayed previously. She is a 7 year old healthy, well adjusted pup! She actually is one of the most laid back pups in my home. Just a few links: Canine Spay FAQ - VeterinaryPartner.com - a VIN company! She should be kept as quiet as possible...no running and jumping. They recover really do recover quickly. Another thing to think about.... are her baby teeth all out? If not, you may want to have the vet remove them at the same time...or put if off another month or so. Good luck! |
Got blood work back on Emmylou today. She has raised counts in her liver. They want to do another blood test after fasting on Monday. The vet thinks this may be why we have had trouble with her eating too. So the spaying will be put off for now. |
