Switching food At what age should I switch from puppy food to dog food for my Zoie? |
I’d say a year is a good age, I believe that is when I switched Peanut. |

I've read 10 months, but 10 to 12 months should be okay. The main concern is that puppy food is higher calorie and more nutrient dense, so you don't want to keep feeding it indefinitely. |

Since December when we got Camrey, she has been eating Blue Buffalo Life Protection Formula Chicken & Oatmeal Recipe for Small Breed Puppies. I switched just before 11 months to Blue Buffalo Life Protection Formula Chicken & Brown Rice Recipe for Small Breed Adult Dogs. Prior to switching, Camrey ate when 'she' wanted to eat, not when I put the bowl down. I used to worry she was not eating enough but the vet told me she would eat when she was hungry. Could never get into a routine or set schedule the way she was eating!!! Now with the new food, she waits for me to feed her and immediately goes over & eats!!! I switched a little early because if I opened a new bag of puppy food, she would be on it for another 4 months, if not longer. |
Switching foods It important that puppies get the added nutrition but more importantly the calcium that puppy food provides for their growing bones and teeth. You should keep them on the puppy food for at least a year. Plus when you switch food I can and normally does cause an up set or worse diarrhea do so gradually. You will want to mix the old and new foods for a couple of week mixing (80/20% 60/40% 50/50% 40/60%) until you get to 100% new food. |
