Question on canine caviar
 
Does anyone know the shelf life on canine caviar I have a 5# little girl and she only gets a 1/4 cup per day I had to order the 12# bag. I will be putting in lock & lock which is air tight on the front of the bags show expiration date 11/2014 but am wondering once bag is open if this will change the quality of it if last me for 6 months.

Mary Lou, I have heard that the expiration for any opened bag of dog food is 6 weeks but hopefully someone that knows more than I do will respond. I have been looking for a place that sells Cannine Caviar in the 4# bags but so far no success. I can only find 12# bags. Like you, mine only eat about 1 cup a day so a 12# bag lasts a long time.

I always freeze part of the bag in plastic containers.

jNever thought about freezing it.

Someone told me not to take dog food out of the original bag for some reason that I can't remember now. That could be an Old Wives Tale.

I know 4 # bags of CC are available somewhere, just don't know where. I sent a request to Chewy.com to see if they were going to start stocking 4# bags and they told me not at this time.

You guys can try to contact the store I buy Peanut’s food- they always have the 4 pound bags, yes they are in California but that last time I called them to see how much it would be to ship out of state and they said 5-8$ which isn't bad..

They also have a website, you could probably get the shipping quote, however when I called the lady looked around and gave me the cheapest shipping quote.

With all the recalls these days, they probably told you to keep it in the bag so you can check the numbers if your food is recalled :(

I didn't know that the shelf life was 6 weeks. Good to know that. I have a Vittles Vault but it's soooo hard to open! I end up keeping a few days worth of food in a ziploc bag so I only have to open it occasionally.

If you freeze it, cut the numbers off and tape them on one of the containers. Use that container last. :) I put mine in zip lock bags and tape the numbers on the bag, but I'm going to freeze the next bag in smaller containers. :thumbup: I love this idea!:thumbup:

We just purchased a second 12 lb. bag of puppy CC for Princess Sophie and she is 6 months old on 7/4. I figure when this bag is out we will move her to CC adult. Don't know what kind just yet.

Those bags last FOREVER!!!!! I asked if they could get smaller bags in at the shop I go to, and they said no. :( I wish they would!

I just ordered some CC for my guys- still waiting on it to come in but my two piggies go through two 5 pound bags in a little over a month :p
If you open the bag but put it in an air tight container would it be the same expiration or no??

I read somewhere that the kibble should be stored in it's original bag (bc it's specially designed to prevent moisture?), in an air tight container, away from the sun & heat & be used up w/in 2-3 months. I have 4 mouths to feed, so a 12# bag is done in about 2 months...I transfer a week's worth into a container.

That article was interesting! This part is really intriguing: "Freezing dry dog food for 3-7 days will also kill storage mites and most other insects. If your dog is allergic to storage mites (and over 90% of dogs with atopic dermatitis are), the mite carcasses and droppings will still present a problem, but freezing can prevent a few mites from turning into a full-blown infestation."

I'd be interested to see how many owners of YT pups affected by atopic dermatitis buy in bulk.

I've heard that people rice comes w/insect' eggs already in the bag sometimes:eek:, so freezing it will kill it.

I think if a dog would have atopic dermatitis, it would be from this: Canine Diseases Linked to Cereal Grains in Dog Food (Part 1)

We always see so many people here that have itchy pups. What's the first thing we tend to try? Switching the food. If 90% of dogs that suffer atopic dermatitis are also allergic to these mites and their owners buy big bags of food & don't freeze it, it just seems like a vicious cycle.

I'll be freezing our food, it's a new bag & I do buy the big bag. I never thought of freezing it but I will from now on.

So are they saying the mite is already in the food? Would it be the grain inclusive food, since mites eat grains...I feed grain free. Talking about mites & insects are giving me the itchies loll!

I called cc corp office out in Calif and they yes to freeze if you purchase the bigger bags. I have lock and lock bowls I purchase from QVC they are air tight so that is what I am planning on doing they are bigger containers so I will just open and take out about a weeks supply at a time and then put in fridge until used up. Oh boy what we go thru to keep these little darlings in good health but they are so worth it

I would too. I never thought Cinders food would make her itch and scratch. I'll be freezing all her food now. I already freeze part of her wet food, I'll do the dry too.

So, she needs her own closet and now a mini freezer... she's not spoiled in the least bit, is she? :eek::thumbup::D

I am so glad to see this post! I, too, have had to buy the bigger bag and halfway thru, Moses starts not eating. I know it has something to do with the food getting stale, but don't know what to do about it! I thought about freezing half of it, but worry about moisture. I wonder if bagging it using one of those airtight bag systems would work! I don't understand why it's so hard to get the 4 lb bags. As popular as this food is, you would think CC would kick up production.
