Yorkie won't eat after having 12 teeth removed Our 13 year old dear little yorkie had 12 teeth removed last Tuesday. She made it though surgery without any trouble. She hasn't eaten a good meal since. She eats bits and pieces here and there. She doesn't seem to be able to control her tongue. She gets something in her mouth, gums it and doesn't swallow. Wet food doesn't work. All she will eat, if she does, is luncheon meat. Can anyone tell me what to do? Thanks. |
I would call the vet and see what they say. I had a 16 year old that had all his teeth removed and within a day he was eating canned food. If nothing is wrong maybe try grinding kibble to see if she will eat that. I hope she feels better soon. |
Awww poor baby!! I would think that by now she would be eating at least soft food. I wouldn't recommend feeding her luncheon meats as they are loaded with sodium and not good for us, and wouldn't be good for your pup!! Good luck, I hope you can find something really good for her and she begins eating more very soon! I'm sending hugs and prayers that your puppy starts feeling better really soon!! Blessings! |
Can't blame that sweet baby. She hasn't learned how to use her tongue and accept the new reality and is probably still sore and stressed by the changes. In time, she'll come to accept it and likely eat normally. I agree I would call the vet for help but you can soak kibble, add some canned if you want and make a mash out of it that she can lick up until her gums are better healed. Or if you home cook, you can put the cooked food in the food processor and make a baby-food type food for her to eat for a while until she's more accepting. |

Million dollar question; would U be able to eat after U had 12 teeth removed? Controlling your tongue with no teeth is an adjustment after 12 years of controlling. Hopefully u can feed her some mush food with chicken gravy so she can eat. |
I would use the soaked, softened dog food and use my finger to place some of it in the corner pocket of her mouth and let her work on it slowly until over time she begins to learn ways to handle her tongue without all those teeth to hold it in place. In time, she will slowly learn to control it given patience and soft food. She'll have to learn all over again how to eat. I've heard it said that toothless dogs learn to eat fine. |
Poor baby! How about mixing plenty of chicken broth or water with canned food, so she can lap it up. Her gums have to be extremely sore! I know a dog that has no teeth and she does fine eating. She eats canned or crushed up dry food. I hope she feels better, soon! |
If my guys ever lost their teeth, I'm going to feed them The Honest Kitchen. It's ground up dehydrated food & you just add water to rehydrate...no chewing involved & they love it. Hope you'll find something that she'll eat. |
Poor little baby. Maybe try some Gerber cerel mixed with deluted can milk and some baby food. Something that doesn't have alot of salt or things in it that would be bad for her. She might eat the chicken baby food or even some of the vegetables like green beans that are strained. Hope she feels better soon and will start eating her canned dog food again. She is probably sore and it looks like to me just a shock to have that many teeth pulled at one time. Make sure she gets water and doesn't dehydrate. Good luck. |
