Help my yorkie has terrible allergies! Hello everyone, this is my first time on this website and I am hoping someone out there can help us. We have a 3 year old yorkie named Riley that has suffered from dust and ragweed allergies all of his life. We have been to dermatologists, veterinarians and to no avail. We did find relief by using a steroid called Temeril P but it caused pancreatitis that almost killed our beloved dog. Our veterinarian has basically given up, we are left with keeping him on benadryl and using sprays which really don't help that much. Does anyone have any advise that they can give me? It is heartbreaking to watch him scratch and chew his hair off constantly. :( |
I feel your pain - mine have some pollen issues as well, one worse than the other. I too have been to Derms, and they were simply amazing! I'm surprised your Derm didn't suggest the meds beyond Tem-p - what about steroids, Atopica, skin testing and shots...? The bottom line is always this, imo: if the dog has year round (or close to) allergies, then something like Atopica should be tried. If it's just seasonal, then you try Tem-P, steroids, or OTCs (which I doubt would work for you). My Marcel is on Atopica, and it changed his life! At the worst times of year, he'd wake up at 1am to chew his paws. He doesn't do that anymore. Get your kiddo on a fish oil/omega and on some probiotics too, btw. What are you feeding him? We have tried the Atopica for 2 months with no change as well, the vet does not want to put Riley back on steroids (Temeril P) as she feels that is what caused the pancreatitis. When we went to the allergist she didn't feel shots would be helpful as his allergies are to dust and ragweed which are hard to avoid. He is an indoor dog pretty much, if he goes outside he tries to eat everything he sees which can make him very sick as well so he is trained to go on pads. As far as food he was on W/D after the pancreatitis but is now on Blue Buffalo salmon and sweet potato along with a little bit of Royal Canine dry food for yorkies. I read a post yesterday about a cream called Dermacton which I have ordered to see if it will do anything. He already has sprays, shampoo and conditioners from the vet that help somewhat but hopefully this cream will do the trick! |

You prob already know this, but some dogs take longer than 2 mths to show relief on Atopica. Most dogs do show relief earlier, but there are some outlyers. Are you still giving it now, past the 2 mths? Ragweed is the nastiest allergen. That's one of Marcel's trigger allergies too - and we live in the Ragweed capital of the U.S....and guess what? Right next to South Mountain - the Ragweed mountain-capital of Phoenix. Nice, eh? Have you read about plant sterols? There is some data out there that plant sterols can help (in specific formulations) some dogs with allergies. You may want to research Moducare, and see if that interests you. The other thing I'd also mention is something called Healthy Goo - that can help desensitize some dogs to allergens. The owner of Healthy Goo is tremendously helpful, and he'd talk to you on the phone about it, if you like...several of us have done so. He actually has his own daughter on the Goo too. |
Hi and welcome to YT! I'm really sorry to hear that your pup is having such a hard time with allergies. Have you thought of changing his diet to Canine Caviar. Several people on YT have had pups with allergies that cleared up after putting their pups on CC. You might want to check it out. I would suggest you go to www.caninecaviar.com and contact them for some samples to see if it will help. Heck, I immediately put our pup on CC when she first came to us just to try to avoid any allergies. Good luck and I sure hope your baby gets some relief very soon!! |
