microchip just a question how do they put microchips in and how safe is it? we are thinking of having sirius chiped. also how old do they have to be? |
I got Tinker microchipped when I got her spayed. She was 7 months old at the time. I think they use a hollow needle that they put the microchip in, and then place it around the shoulder region. As far as I know it is safe. I did it because she is soooo little and doesn't wear a collar. I would suggest it. |
I don't know what the youngest age it can be done, but I do know that a lot of reputable breeders are starting to microchip their puppies before the sell them. |
Living overseas we have to have our pets microchiped and I've been calling vets on the economy and our local US military vet and they've all said pretty much the same thing. They have recommended that since Yorkies are a small breed to do it while getting them Spayed/neutered because the needle they use will make it painful for the little guys. I know for big dogs it's nothing because the actual microchip is about the size of an uncooked grain of rice but since our babies are so little it can be very painful for them. They also recommended that my baby be at least 6 months old for that procedure because of they fact that they recommend doing it with the other surgery and it will be less painful for them. It's just what I've been told over here so you might want to call around and ask your vet what they normally do with such a small breed. |
Mojo got his at 6 months, i didn;t notice any pain at all,,,he didn;t even cry... |
It can be done as young as 8 weeks. Which is good for breeders who like to microchip their babies before going to their new homes. It is a hollow needle and the chip is inserted in the same spot where your baby will get their vaccinations. You can even do it yourself, IF you are experienced with giving vaccinations. It is relatively easy. Hope that helps you out. :) |
My Yorkies have had their microchips at 8 weeks old . Placing one is the same as when they have vaccination . Mine did not even make a sound when the microchip was implanted . |
I was just trying to tell what the vet told me and I'm glad that other people have heard different. The only thing I'm not sure of over here is if we have to have the country that we live in do the microchipping or if we can have an American chip placed because they are on different registries and it won't be read in the USA if it's not. That's all I was trying to state in my post, and that maybe they should ask their vet about what their procedures are. |
microchip You can have your dog microchipped at any vets office that does it, I work for a vet. It is a simple procedure done with a syringe. The same syringe that is used for vaccines. There are only two magor companies that produce microchips for pets and they are AVID and Home again. They are done all around the world and the information which is a number in the chip is put into a data base with your information. Very good idea to have it done and inexspensive also. You can microchip as early as six weeks old. My yorkie was stolen 2 1/2 years ago and he was recently found in Florida. I now have him back thanks in part to AVID the company that made his chip. It does work and also can prove ownership because lets face it a lot of dogs do look alike . |
I'm glad to know Pixie is old enough. I finally found a collar small enough for her, and this week I bought the smallest tag I could find. There was only enough room for her name and my cell phone number on it. However, She is so tiny it hangs down and she can chew on it, so I had to take it off. I would die if she got lost so microchipping is a must. Does anyone know if you can register with both registries with the same microchip? |
josieb...... someone on here said something about actually calling and registering your number and all that..... we recently got toby microchipped but the vet never told us anything about this, ...... we have teh AVID one as well. we got a certificate with his number and stuff, but they never said anything about registering it |
microchip orinskye.........Yes you must call the 800 number on the papers you recieved, if there is no number there, you can go online to the avid site . You must call avid to activate your information . The vet just implants the chip. Call avid and tell them you need to give your info for that chip number . They put all info into avid data base . I found my dog after being stolen, he was missing 2 1/2 years . Just got him back from Florida in February. I live in New York. He was scanned by a vet , my avid number came up, avid gave them the info and she called me!!! Josieb |
