Should I be worried? Ear question Today I was inspecting my puppy Stella's ears and noticed some dry black gunk in it. I got some of it out, she didn't cry or act like she was in pain, just annoyed with me instead lol. There was a smell to it and kind of resembles dirt. She doesn't really scratch her ears, just once in a while. Could this be an infection? Or is this normal wax build up in yorkies? She has stand up ears if it makes a difference. Any feedback? Thanks in advance! |
I would have the vet look at it just to be sure it's not mites or an infection. |
I don't think dry black gunk is a typical Yorkie feature. Do you get her groomed? Some groomers will pull the hairs from their ear canals (Yorkies as a breed tend to have quite a bit), which helps their chances of avoiding ear infections. You can also buy ear cleaners, which is nice to have around. Keep cotton balls in their ears or pinch ears shut while bathing as well to keep excess moisture out. I would say that is either mites or an ear infection, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to go to the veterinarian and get it checked out. Good luck! |
Ears Could be a fungal infection too. Please let a vet look at the ears as there is something wrong in there. Most ear issues can be relatively easily treated if caught early and can be serious if not. Black gunk is not normal in my view. |
If it is an infection, you may not want to use this med...MOMETAMAX http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...log-first.html. http://blog.petmeds.com/ask-the-vet/.../#comment-7573 |

My first thought would be mites, but you said she's not scratching much? Usually mites will have them digging away. I'd definitely have the vet take a looksee just to be on the safe side. |
You need a vet to look at it. |
How long has it been since you cleaned her ears? Having perky ears, they tend to collect more dirt/dust/etc... You said there was a smell to it? If it's pungent kind of smell, then my guess is that her ears are dirty and need cleaning. Youtube some clips on how to clean their ears or ask your vet to show you how. |
Ears IMHO, until the source of the gunk and smell is diagnosed by a vet I would not attempt to clean yourself. The ear canal in the Yorkie is complicated and not accessible easily. The vet has proper tools to examine and clean/ flush as necessary. Then he will administer drops or medication. The vet will advise if and how to clean at home. Again this could be a simple issue if seen by a vet. Just my view! |
