Tatiana got sick from something she ate! Well, Tatiana ate something that didn't agree with her. She started not feeling well early Sunday morning. She vomited and wouldn't eat and just wanted me to hold her & sleep. In the afternoon, the diarrhea started.....watery diarrhea! I called the vet to see if I should bring her in or what to do. Basically kept her hydrated til morning & then since she was still having diarrhea, I took her in for a check. She was checked out and hydrated with fluids & nausea medication. She also came home on antibiotics for the next 10 days. Her weight was 2.2....a couple ounce less than she was last week. I took a stool sample as I thought she had blood in her feces....which she did because of all the irritation from the diarrhea! A similar experience happened to Teeka about 6 weeks ago....she ate something that did not agree with her. She also threw up last night and had a loose stool! I don't know what caused her to vomit......something she found outside......her vomit had black flecks or particles and was gray in color....really gross! The vet says they both have very sensitive systems! So my question....how do I know what is going to upset their systems? I know my outside dogs food is not good for them. Even when I am right there, they seem to find something to eat off the ground! How ever am I to keep them from eating junk off the ground! Sorry this is so long. It really worries me that they are eating junk that is making them so sick!!! I don't expect an answer to this problem....I just needed to get this off my chest! |
I share your frustration over trying to protect our pups from eating things on the ground. Both of my boys have found chocolate recently. They also find chicken bones and all kinds of stuff on our walks. Vigilance is the only answer, but I know that is harder when they are off leash. Mushrooms are a constant source of worry for me especially with all the rain we have had. Praying your girls are back to 100% soon. |
It is like you have to watch them constantly when they are outside! Even inside, they seem to find something that is not eatable....the other day, Tatiana had something in her mouth and I looked to see what she had...it was a piece of modeling clay that one of the grandkids had dropped! If I hadn't caught her, she might have choked! |
Upset tummy I am so sorry that your babies have been sick, but pray that it is only temporary. It is so hard keeping their enquiring mouths from picking up bad stuff. I watch my boy like a hawk when on walks as sniffing can turn into ingesting at the drop of a hat. I try to look ahead to see what he could get at, but occasionally he does pick something up. Luckily I have caught it and been able to get it out of his mouth before it disappears. I even thought of getting a muzzle, but decided against it. I keep him on a leash outside, even for potty breaks. As for the house, I have the cleanest floors in the USA! LOL! Everything I drop is a race to get there first! He is mercurial! I even keep him out of the kitchen if I feel there is a risk he might pick up something when I am cooking. But sooner or later he will get into something bad and probably get sick, it is almost impossible to be 100 percent secure. Then it is vet time, poor baby. Good luck and I hope your baby gets well soon. |
Aww poor thing, I hope Tatiana feels better:p Joels new thing is finding little cracked pieces of grout from the tiles or tiny pebbles, and I'll hear him chomping and grinding on them. So now I just have to say "Spit it out and I'll get you a prize" and he gets this look where he's trying to figure out if it's worth it, lol but he almost always drops it:) It works on almost everything........except worms:( |
Hope she's feeling better today... |
I know the feeling, my dad has moved in with us and I am terrified of him dropping a pill and not realizing it and when he eats he makes a slight mess on the floor so I am constantly looking. I don't even buy foods that are harmful (raisins/grapes/chocolate chip cookies, etc) anymore because I'm afraid he might drop a little bit while eating. My sons are very well trained on being cautious with the little ones :p I usually wait till my dad goes to bed and then get on my hands and knees and look at the floor if anything has dropped :( These littles have no idea how much we worry about them! I pray your baby gets well soon :hands: |
Good news! Tatiana is feeling so much better, today! She are a little scrambled egg and a few pieces of her food. Still very tired, but so much better.....and no diarrhea! :cheer::woof::yay_jump: The hydration and medicine are working! Thanks everyone! :) |
Great news! I'm happy Tatiana is eating and doing better. I know how worried you must have been. |
So glad Tati is doing better! You'd be surprised how fast they can pick things off the floor...I was eating my egg turkey bacon sandwich for breakfast & I dropped a tiny piece of the turkey bacon on the floor...since I like it very crispy. I reached for it & Momo already picked it up & ate it! The piece was a quarter of a dime, so I didn't think it would hurt him, but he ended up having explosive diarrhea later that day. He was fine after 2 very loose bowel movements...once the turkey bacon was out of his system. I wonder what would've happened if he accidentally ate a real bacon! TG he won't bc I don't eat pork or red meat. |
Tati Good news that Tati is feeling better now, but sorry she still has a way to go to be completely over it, poor baby. Mimi: My, I am amazed so little people food could have such a dire effect on your Momo. We sure have to be ultra careful as they are so very fast at picking up orts that we drop. |
on walks I feel like all I say is "no" ,'No", "no",as she goes to the bird poop, geese poop, worm etc...how come when we were kids dogs ate everything and never seemed to get sick? They also ate alpo and god knows what that was... |

Kim's Isn't it the truth! I sound like a nag on walks, but he wants to eat everything. LOL! The 'leave it' command he has not got yet! I often have wondered how dogs we had years ago rarely went to vets and had dentals, ate bones and anything else around the kitchen and junk commercial food???? They always seemed to live long and not get sick. Also they were mostly mutts, perhaps that is the secret? Sorry Tati is still not completely over it, hope she puts on the lost weight soon. |
I now do what I call the "mushroom stomp". We've had rain galore, so I go out each morning before work and smash all the mushrooms I can find. Blake will pick up anything...he's like a hoover vac!!! |
