excessive yorkie scratching For the past few weeks our yorkie has been excessively scratching. We have repeatedly used oatmeal based dog shampoos and she has also been treated for fleas and has none. My bf and I have been discussing whether we should cut her hair shorter in order to alleviate this problem |
Hi and Welcome to YT! I would stop using oatmeal based shampoos as some dogs are allergic to them. |
If the itching continues I would see a vet. My moms dog does this and it is usually allergies or yeast. The vet can suggest what we need to do. |
My Yorkie has the same problem. She scratches herself quite a bit. We have a family pharmacy here that does lots of natural remedies, oils, drops and such and the pharmacist recommended a drop called "Skin Aid" (Moist Dermatitis) - comes in a little glass bottle. You can put up to 15 drops in their water bowl or 4 drops directly into their mouth (it comes with a dropper and the oral way was easier for us since our girl doesn't drink a ton of water). It has helped our little girl a lot. Before we began using it her poor fur had flakes all in it and her belly was so dry and flakey. So far so good! I can tell it has really helped alleviate her itchiness. Fish oil also does great - we got a large bottle from our vet. You can give it in a dropper or put some on their food. Makes their fur very soft and silky too. Best wishes and I hope she can find some relief. :) |
Hi & welcome to YT, When I adopted (2 mos. ago) my little Milo, the rescue recommended, "John Paul Pet Cleanse Tea Tree Shampoo" by the co-founder of Paul Mitchell. It is cruelty free & says that it soothes & moisturizes. Milo had been so badly neglected that the rescue's groomer had to shave almost all his hair off. I bathe him once a wk & so far, it has done an excellent job. I took him to the vet last wk. He sd he once had a Yorkie & he recommended that I also use a good conditioner. He sd I cld use human conditioner if I wanted b/c Yorkies hve a tendency for dry skin. So, when I bathed him Sunday, I used some of my own "Clairol nice'neasy Colorseal Conditioning Gloss". So far, he has hardly scratched at all & his coat looks wonderful. Good Luck! |

My daughters yorkie has seasonal allergies. In the fall she itches all the time due to the leaves. I would take her to the vet they can give her something to help the itching. |
When Ian scratches, I give him a coconut oil rinse, and that really helps. I melt organic coconut oil, and pour it in his bathtub, which Is filled with warm water. I use a container to keep pouring the water over him while rubbing it in. I do not rinse him. When I comb him, I always use a flea comb to make sure nothing is on him, also, it keeps him tangle free. |
Cutting the hair doesn't help w/ itching, unfortunately. I would stop the oatmeal shampoos right away. Despite the belief out there, oatmeal shampoos can actually irritate the heck out of skin, esp the skin of allergy dogs. Vet Derms won't prescribe it (none that I've worked with) bc of this very issue. I'd suggest either a medicated shampoo from your vet or perhaps switch to Johnsons Baby Shampoo for awhile since it's very mild. This is PRIME allergy/pollen season. You should go to pollen.com and type in your zip code and note the current allergens in your area -- those could be key to what's going on w/ your kiddo right now. What is his/her age btw? What are you feeding? Are you giving fish oil/omega supplements? (you should) Lastly WELCOME TO YT :)! |
