I think breeders should do more than all owners...but we know that is not happening with the large majority of breeders. I don't put breeders on a pedestal .. I have seen far too much in my lifetime to do that. They don't edcuate, they don't inform....they don't vet properly ... I could go on and on....I am not referring to ALL breeders...just the vast majority. |

I was told that it is very common to find them just the way Teddy's was found. That most do not have any symptoms at all. Not that none do...we all know they do; but apparently being asymptomatic is very common. They often find them after the dog develops stones. The signs and symptoms of hepatic encephalopathy are not very easily detected in dogs..much easier in humans because you can assess mental status. |

Had her two year physical & he said there was no need for yearly bloodwork at her age with no issues, and that every other year is fine. (although she still had blood drawn for her heartworm test) Does this seem right? Should I be requesting something more? |

There are many more pre breeding tests, that I would not do for the pet dog that is healthy. Awh your dog is a gal. So even with an early spay which is what I think you had, just a monthly (by you) palpation of her mammary's would be good. While the overwhelming majority of mammary tumours happen in un-spayed or late spayed females there is a very very small incidence of tumours in the early spayed female (prior to her first heat). Other than that as you know as an experienced dog owner, abrupt changes in behaviour and or elimination is cause for a trip to the vet. |

As for the yearly blood work...I do prefer it myself...BUT the thing is that for a HW test it is around $30 and if I do blood work that also adds on the HW test it is $46. So, it is really only an extra $16. My vet encourages it. And, YES, there are very responsible pet owners out there. I am not saying anything other and did not mean to insult anyone...I was merely responding to the talk about doing tests that IMHO and the opinions of my vets do not feel is necessary.
