Like I said, to each his own. And, quite frankly, I did not know we were referring to breeders in this thread. I think breeders should do more than all owners...but we know that is not happening with the large majority of breeders. I don't put breeders on a pedestal .. I have seen far too much in my lifetime to do that. They don't edcuate, they don't inform....they don't vet properly ... I could go on and on....I am not referring to ALL breeders...just the vast majority. |

The symptoms (clinical that is) can come on at any age, but most frequently under one year old - or so it seems. |
I was told that it is very common to find them just the way Teddy's was found. That most do not have any symptoms at all. Not that none do...we all know they do; but apparently being asymptomatic is very common. They often find them after the dog develops stones. The signs and symptoms of hepatic encephalopathy are not very easily detected in dogs..much easier in humans because you can assess mental status. |

What I do have control of, is what I do with my breeding dogs, what changes I can make through the breed clubs I am a member of, to learn and to educate breeders and the public alike. I can try to make a difference, through fact/science based education and study. I will always advocate for more testing than less. Be it a pet owner or a breeder. And yes I am intimately aware of cost. |

Anyway...that is a bit off the topic. I have voiced my little opinion on it all..not much more I can add. :) In the end, I hope that one day LS and other horrible conditions that are in dogs due to neglectful breeding won't be around so much but I don't think I will live to see that. |

I seem to have gone from one end of the spectrum, with a vet with my last yorkie, who was all about money/billing and would try to sell you everything under the sun....to a different vet with ZoE, who doesn't push anything on you. She had a BAT done at around 6 months. Had bloodwork done before her spay at 6month. Had bloodwork done at one year with her full physical. Had her two year physical & he said there was no need for yearly bloodwork at her age with no issues, and that every other year is fine. (although she still had blood drawn for her heartworm test) Does this seem right? Should I be requesting something more? |

Then you will need to read up on senior care, vaccinations for the senior dog et al. And I am so glad you posted that at least some owners want to spend money on more than "the rudimentary vet care". There are many more pre breeding tests, that I would not do for the pet dog that is healthy. Awh your dog is a gal. So even with an early spay which is what I think you had, just a monthly (by you) palpation of her mammary's would be good. While the overwhelming majority of mammary tumours happen in un-spayed or late spayed females there is a very very small incidence of tumours in the early spayed female (prior to her first heat). Other than that as you know as an experienced dog owner, abrupt changes in behaviour and or elimination is cause for a trip to the vet. |

As for the yearly blood work...I do prefer it myself...BUT the thing is that for a HW test it is around $30 and if I do blood work that also adds on the HW test it is $46. So, it is really only an extra $16. My vet encourages it. And, YES, there are very responsible pet owners out there. I am not saying anything other and did not mean to insult anyone...I was merely responding to the talk about doing tests that IMHO and the opinions of my vets do not feel is necessary. Again, to each his own. |
