Age Collapsing Trachea Shows Up? I could search, but I really don't have a lot of time these days. Does anyone know the average age CP starts showing itself? Or can it just be anytime? Mandie just turned 1 in April. I noticed earlier this week that she was making a few noises while just laying on the couch. Didn't last long and I didn't have time to video or decipher CP, Reverse Sneeze, etc... Then, when I gave her a bath the other day, she has never done this, but she started making a noise and I would call it honking but I'd have to hear it again. She did it almost the entire time I worked on her head. She always gets freaked when I do her head. Again, I know RS can come about when they get "excited" but what about CP? Does it get triggered or is it just anytime? As I said, she did a noise a couple of times when she wasn't all worked up, too but that was very very brief (I even talked myself into thinking she just had a hair in her throat). Does CP have an "onset" age? TIA! |

"A honking cough in a small breed dog should make a pet owner or veterinarian highly suspicious of tracheal collapse. The average age of onset is somewhere between six and eight years of age but it can occur at a much younger age or wait to show up until much later in life." From: Tracheal Collapse You should take her to the vet for diagnosis, just for your own peace of mind. |

It depends on the severity of the condition. |

There's no set age for CT that I'm aware of... Reverse sneezing is just as alarming & Momo does it all the time. I've even had his throat x-rayed when he was a pup even tho vet told me CT doesn't show up unless he's having an attack right @ the moment they x-ray him. I've video taped him on several different occasions & the vet says it's RS. They also test by rubbing their finger up & down the dog's throat, if a dog has CT, this motion will trigger an attack & it could even be a slight touch & they'll start honking. Hope Mandie's is just RS...is the pollen count high where you are? It could just be allergies. |

I'm really thinking it is RS, but you know...I"m a crazy yorkie mommy so I'm freaking out. I have to take her brother to the vet Tues morning so I'll talk to her about it. |

My little Mariposa died from CT. She made it 6 yrs. The last 4 were awful. She started severe 'honking' around 1 yr. No, she never had a collar on in her life, and although she could be a handful, I never tried to choke her to death.....OK I know, just some sick humor. But she had been playful and healthy. It seemed to start when she got warm and panted then it went downhill fast. She was a beauty and I believe hung in there that long because she must have had one heck of a healthy heart to let her go on sometimes for weeks being almost constant. It got so I kept people away from the house because just getting excited could bring on an episode that could last for a very long time. I think a lot of dogs will do a bit of 'honking' here and there but it doesn't get bad. I hope your baby will be alright and this is not the problem. If it does happen though, there are probably a few of us that have gone through this that can help you. |

I am so sorry for your loss of Mariposa! :( Thank you for sharing that information, though. I am always trying to absorb info and actual personal accounts. It helps me a lot. |
