Tooth care advice
 
Because it's difficult to brush Ruger's teeth, I've been giving him what I'm told are treats and chews that are supposed to be good for his dental health. I started with Greenies, and while he loves them I'm told they don't do much and are known as Doggie Cocaine. Stopped that and I'm now giving him Oral Care Chews which are made by VET dentahex (Ventoquinol). These were recommended by my vet and Ruger loves them.

Yes, I realize brushing is best, and he needs to see the vet on a regular basis, but any thoughts on these chews the vet recommends? They have Chlorhexidine in them, whatever that is.

Chlorhexidine is an antiseptic. They use it for skin cleansing .. never heard of it in dog treats....maybe it is in CET?? Is that the treats your vet is recommending?

Yep, Chlorhexidine is in them (CET chews). That is interesting in that everyone threw a fit about the tiny bit of Xylitol in the CET water additive and no one is saying anything about this.

I personally don't use them but I just don't like edible chews of any type.

Try this ....noticed a big big change in my daughter's dogs teeth and I sweat my Cooper's teeth are whiter! recommended by our vet

CET chews are good and do seem to work some.

I was using the dental additives (bioten) that you put in their water. They seem to work great because after using for a few weeks the tarter is so soft you can scrape it off with your nail. They only downside is that you are throwing it away all the time unless they are drinking all the water.

I just ordered the Plaque off and will be giving it a try to see how it works. It goes on their food and mine lick their bowls clean so none should be wasted. I've heard good things about it so we will see if it is as good as it says. I'm thinking about taking before and after pictures as well.

As always, thanks for the advice. Yes, the vet sells the chews in the front office. I guess I'll know if they work when Ruger goes in for his next full checkup.
