Green Goop in Eyes Okay, for about 5 days now, Jackson has been getting green goop in his eyes. Not like 24/7 but mostly in the mornings. It's green-ish in color and goopy. I've been using a warm towel to get it out in the AM's. He always will have the normal eye crusty every once in a while but this is just nasty goopy. Does green always = infection? We have a vet appt. in 45 mins, but wanted your opinions or if you had experienced before. I was originally thinking allergies, due to pollen (which has been very bad), etc, and about a month ago, he was sneezing a lot and doing a gagging noise (after his dental, so thought it was from that). Vet listened and said it sounded like allergies. She told me to get him chlorpheniramine over the counter. Well, I never did because the issue just went away about 10 days after his dental. lol. But I went by store yesterday and bought some and gave him 4mg (one pill) of it to see if it helps. He woke up this morning with only a little bit, but it was still green. It was mostly just his right eye at first, now it's both. Nothing else seems irritated, it doesn't seem to be bothering him, I lifted up his eye and it does seem a tad red, but I'm not really sure what's normal or not. Anyway, we're headed out soon, and I'll tell you what the vet says. Just wanted to know if anyone else went thru it. |
Hmmm I don't think it's allergies. I always thought yellow or greenish discharge was a sign of infection. Hope Jackson will be ok! |
My understanding is green is infection. If it were yellow, I would think allergies, but I would still go to the vet with any thick discharge that isn't white or clear. Any redness in the white of the eye, I would also see the vet. I stopped using sterile saline (even the preservative free) in Max's eyes because something in it always irritated his eyes and caused green goopy discharge/infection. I'm glad you are seeing the doctor. Sending positive thoughts for Jax. |
Regarding the sterile saline, I should say something about it (instead of something in it :p) irritated Max's eyes. |
Brit, be sure to tell the vet your activities leading up to when this started, including swimming, or if you have been walking somewhere dusty. |
I hope Jackson is ok. Usually green is infection. I hope the vet visit went well |
I hope the vet visit goes well |
Praying all goes well :hands: |
I agree colored discharge usually means infection. My boy had a similar discharge which was diagnosed as uveitis and then cataracts followed. By now you will have the answer from the vet. Hope it is a minor issue that can be easily treated. |
I don't know, but I hope he will be okay. |
Thanks Guys! :D I swear, I never leave the vet w/o spending $200  lol.. he was due for rabies too and I usually just get them at the clinic near my house for $10 but since we were already there, just got it. Anyway, vet did a Glaucoma Test which came back perfect. She said the numbers were good, whatever that means. She also did a corneal stain and looked into his eye in the dark, and did not see any scratches or anything on the eyes. So she thinks it's just some kind of infection. His left eye was definitely kind of red when she lifted up his eye lids. She gave me eye drops (that have a little pink top on them) and it says: 'Neomycin and Polymyxin B sulfate and dexamethasone Opthalmic Suspension' She said to give them 2-3x a day and they usually work pretty fast but if it seems to get worse or not better, to stop them and call her immediately. So *crosses fingers* hopefully the drops help! |
Fingers and paws crossed here too. |
I'm happy to hear his corneas are fine. Those are the drops Max had a few times. Should clear up the infection. One time it didn't work on Max and he had to have a steroid drop for a week. I would hold off on swimming until Jackson is done with the meds and his eyes are clear. |

Thank you!! |
Goopy Thanks for the update. So happy that no glaucoma or corneal damage. I am sure the PolyDex drops will clear the infection up quickly and he will be fine. I have used that for my boy when he had infection and it worked well. I believe it has some steroids in the drops and if given for too long can cause corneal deposits. That happened to my dog, so now use a NSAID instead of steroids for any eye problems. |
