flea collars First ...sending thoughts and prayers to all affected by the devastating tornado in Oklahoma. I am not a fan of any type of flea control...only the natural ones...however...the furbutts were at my parents house for the last 6 days while we were in florida for vacation! (YAY!)...NOW back to reality!! :( Sadie had 3ticks on her!!! UCK! I have never has issues with ticks at our house before but want to try a flea and tick collar on them...it works for my Parents little girl...what do you all use? and how are they working for you...I have used parastar on them in the past but, not a fan of putting stuff like that on them. and the natural oils i was using did work but, my neighbor came over with his little guy who has them bad! once one got them....they all got them so i had no other choice but to use the topical... thanks everyone! |
I have use K9 Advantix since Peanut was able to have it on, I never ever had any problems with Ticks or Fleas... Hopefully you are able to find something that works for your pumpkins! |
Flea collars can cause toxicity problems in small dogs. I've even seen skin problems result from their use on large dogs. For fleas, a good bath in regular Dawn dishwahing detergent, followed by a heavy application of creme rinse/condition (Dawn will remove all the oils in the coat) will remove fleas, and a blow dry. The blow dry will separate the hair to make looking for fleas and ticks easier. Ticks should be removed within 24 hours to help prevent tick borne disease. Then vacuum frequently, once or twice daily for a week or so. It's important not to use multiple flea/tick products on the dog and in their environment: like a topical on the dog and flea powder in their bed can be a toxic combination. |
I feel far safer using Frontline on my dogs than any flea and tick collar. There have been 2 recent cases here on YT of Yorkies having terrible reactions to flea collar. The dogs were vomiting, lethargic, losing appetite and having seizure like episodes. With multiple dogs, I would be concerned about collar chewing. I hate the Frontline too and I resist using it, but as I have written -- seeing the misery that a couple of fleas can inflict, I won't risk an infestation. The stress caused to the dog by fleas is worse than the chemicals of Frontline and some other products. Stress weakens the body and negatively impacts health. |
I use andantix. Flea and or tick collars can be very dangerous for small dogs but even big dogs. There was a story on her a few days ago about a Yorkie who got sick from one. |
Turbo almost died when he was puppy bc the flea collar got stuck in his mouth! He was trying to get it off & it got stuck, he had convultions/ seizures & luckily got to the emergency care in time. The lady that was taking care of them @ the time didn't want to use topicals...& the flea collar almost killed him. We used frontline plus for years & it worked very well for us. Only had to use once every 3 months for fleas in the hot months & I never saw any ticks on them. I recently switched to k9 advantix II bc Turbo was getting brown specks along his back where frotline was applied, so I thought it was irritating his skin...well, advantix was worse! They all acted like there were ants crawling along their back. I'm not sure what to do, next monthly applcation is coming up, I think I'll only give them half a dose & see how it goes. |
Also I know some pups try to chew their collar. Which can be toxic and also a choking hazard . |
I just put revolution on my two Yorkies. Not a problem with it. I hate using it but have to do something. NO to flea collars. Toxic. My one Yorkie will lick it off the other. I have read too many problems with those things. I hope you decide on something that works for your dogs. |
WELL! looks like I won't be using flea collars on them! Thanks for the info! what about bathing and using the topical? my vet told me that I couldn't bathe them with it on...and when I finally decided to give them all baths A LOT of their (undercoat, which I know they don't have), came out. they are ALL healthy little furbutts. I know they shed hair like humans but, with out baths every 2 weeks they lost it all at one time...they were not bald and had not bald spots... |

I use Revolution and can bathe them after 2 hours.(as stated on the package) |
my vet sells parastar. I BELIEVE is is supposed to be like frontline. I want what to do what is safe for them. |
Parastar has the same active ingred as regular Frontline. Parastar Plus and Frontline Plus are different. |
