OUCH Wallee pulled a leg muscle We were just out back playing soft frisbee with Wallee when he jumped in the air and twisted. He went down and was limping. We could see him twist right in front of us. We felt so terribly bad seeing him limp. I immediately called my neighbor who knows first aid and she told me to bring him inside and ice it. I did for a few minutes and then he seemd to be walking more and more normally. Sure scared the heck out of us. Does this mean we are going to have to limit his choice of play or was it just a fluke? We had a neighor who had surgery on his leg and sometimes if he runs out hard he pulls it again. I sure hope that I dont have to worry about him running and having fun. He is not small (weighs just under 12 lbs). He is not a jumper at all either (wont even jump up on the couch). He loves to run outside though and we notice when he is running after a ball, he runs very low to the ground..lol. Any advice for future play? Should we skip letting him play frisbee if he is going to jump in the air like that? |
I would have his back legs x-rayed to see if the bones are straight or bowed. If they are bowed, he has a big chance at tearing a ligament or dislocating the knee cap and his playtime should be limited, and not jumping or changing directions quickly when running. I have two that's had knee surgery and is very common in Yorkies. |
I too would get a vet check and x-rays and probably keep him on mild activity over the next two weeks, even if the vet doesn't find anything. He could have strained it and it's bled/swelled some but just not enough to show with a limp or signs of pain. You know dogs often hide injuries/pain when they can and vets often miss things just like our own doctors miss things. After a two week interval, whether or not he played Frisbee again would depend on what his x-rays showed and what the vet said. |
I agree with the ladies above. But had to throw in a "poor little baby" for Wallee! |
I hope Wallee will be ok. Poor puppy! |
Thanks so much for the advice. I will try to look for a new vet here on Tuesday since we are on a long weekend here. I am sure that here in Canada, xrays and an office visit are going to be at least $500.00. I couldn't believe it though just innocent play, he jumped and twisted and when he landed he limped. You could tell he twisted it just by the way he jumped. My heart and my husbands heart sunk when he landed. Just made you feel sick inside. Now tomorrow going outside is going to be a tough one. I will have too take all his toys away for a while as he constantly brings toys to us to throw and fetch. :( I am sure he is going to wonder where they all went. |
Oh, golly, I know that sick feeling of watching your baby injure himself. It takes your breath away. I saw my Jilly as she just was jumping down from the catch using her doggie steps and taking every one of them, not skipping one of anything, and her shoulder dislocated right before my eyes and down she went to the floor. It made me physically ill and we went right to the ER vet, from there to a surgeon across town. I was so crazy I ran through a toll booth without even getting all the change in. I pray that Wallee is going to be okay and that he's really not hurting. Hope he's just a little sore like any of us would be if we came down wrong and it hurt badly. Just pamper him and get him checked out, make him take it easy and I'll bet he'll be fine. This is the down side of pet ownership - the only down side but it sure hurts to see one hurt or sick. I'll be praying Wallee just overdid it a tad and heals right up. |
oh poor Wallee, hope he feels better soon..:) |
Wallee seems back to his old self today however mommy took all his toys away. Took him for a nice quiet walk and keeping him from playing fetch for a few more days yet. |
I'm glad to hear Wallee is on the mend. I'm sure that was very scary to see him twist his leg. Max landed on his foot wrong once while tearing across our bumpy yard. Hearing his yelp and seeing him go down sent shivers up my spine. This is part of why I keep my boys in long coats -- so that I don't see their fragile looking little pencil legs and worry myself sick. :p |
Yeah. I have to agree. Never been so paranoid in my life with any of my pets as I have him. I feel like sometimes I worry so much he doesn't get to be a dog. |
