How do I get Enzo to drink more water? Now that the weather warmer, I worry that Enzo isn't drinking enough. I'm with him almost all day, and I never see him drink, a few licks here and there even after a walk. He's 8 months old. Eats fine. No other issues. I don't want him dehydrated tho. Do some dogs just not get thirsty as often? |
What kind of food do you feed Enzo? Dogs who eat fresh foods or wet foods will drink less because they water from the food. If you feed kibble, then he drink more. My boys started drinking a lot more when I changed their water bowl from stainless steel to glass. The fresher the water, the more they want to drink. I give them a clean bowl every day and change the water at least 3 - 4 times a day. Some people have had great luck with doggy water fountains. |
Jess went through a period of not drinking water. I just added water to her food twice a day and made a gravy. Eventually she started drinking again. |
Hmm if you are concerned that Enzo is dehydrated you can do a little test on him to see. Check the elasticity of the skin on your dog's neck.. A normal hydrated dog, when you pull the skin on the top of his neck and then let it go the skin quickly goes back to normal.. dehydrated dog’s skin will remain tented after you pinch it together or it will very slowly return to its normal position. You can try that test to see what happens. I’m sure Enzo is fine, but it might help you not worry. Peanut isn't much of a water drinker- I mean he drinks, but just not a lot. You can try to put ice in the water.. see if that helps. However I wouldn't worry about it too much, unless you see signs of dehydration!! :D |
Thanks guys! Jeez I love this site :) Enzo eats RC Puppy kibble & a whole bunch of raw fruits & veggies, even a bit of plain yogurt, so he must be getting the liquid he needs from that. He's so different than my Chloe (Maltipoo) was...after a walk, or play, she drank a lot and LOUD enough for the neighbors to hear her! :D Enzo has been with us a month and everyday I learn more about this little guy - Thanks doggie Mommas! |

Water I am sure he is getting enough liquid from his food, so no worries. My boy drinks enough usually but when I was giving him oral meds and wanted him to drink at that time, he would not. I found that adding a very tiny piece of chicken to the water made him drink!! I guess it smelled better than plain water! |
That tip really comes in handy. In the 6 years I have had Peanut I have used that trick many many times!! It is a great tool when they are sick and you can inform your vet from the results of your handy dandy test at home! You can also look at their gums. If they are pale/ white that is another red flag. If they are pale it could be a sign of dehydration. We always want to see pink gums!! :thumbup: |
Is canned pumpkin just for upset tummies or can it be used daily to prevent an upset tummy? |
I agree with Kristin, my girls started drinking when I bought glass bowls and I bought a larger one they seem to like it better. I also offer ice chips. |
