Coat supplements Hi everyone. I have a 12 week old yorkie that I feed blue buffala small breed wet and dry puppy food too. I keep seeing all these supplements to add to food for better skin and coat omegas wheat germ oil etc. Are these helpfull? What supplement is the best? Is he old enough? Some products I have seen have no age requirment and some say 6 months. |
Imo, omegas are great for supplements...even if some are already in the food. As far as age, I'd confirm with your vet before staring anything. I like Ark Naturals Royal Coat bc of its specific components, and its made for dogs specifically. |
Honestly, I don't think that supplements are really NECESSARY if a pup is eating a well balanced diet. It might be good idea to add something for the skin & coat if you notice dryness. I know that my pups get really dry in the winter from the indoor heat. I've used Halo Dream Coat with great success. I've used Grizzly Salmon Oil too. I also gave my little rescue Solid Gold Sea Meal when she was a puppy. She wasn't very healthy & came to me from a stressful environment. For me, the thing that worked better than any supplement was switching foods to Royal Canin. I've tried numerous high-end & holistic foods, but I switched to RC a few months ago & there's been a tremendous improvement in their coats. Congrats on your new puppy!!! |
I add salmon oil for more omegas and it made a huge difference in his coat. However, he does get fishy breath from it. |
I just purchased some Nordic Naturals. I'm going to try some of their omega oils. It's a brand I've been wanting to try out for sometime & I've heard many good things about it. Here's a link to the site: Nordic Pet Collection Because your puppy is still young, I would run any supplements by my vet just to be safe. Good luck with whatever you choose! |
Thank you all for the advice. Remmy goes in for his checkup tomarrow. I will ask the vet. |

I don't supplement much. I just cook Salmon Moki gets his with no seasoning. Cooked separate. I wonder ppl always worry about over feeding. There dogs getting ailments ect. I really don't trust to many supplements .I would rather he get them from the food then processed. I have givng my dogs fish oils, and all kinds of stuff before. Really haven't seem much difference. But my dogs were never ailing or had bad coat itchy whatever. If my dogs have an ailment them maybe I would notice the benefits more? So i'm not suggesting not to supplement either. Just I do believe in over doing it JMO |
