Chocolate Poisoning I just read an article by the local vet re this. Not only is chocolate poisonous but the ground up cocoa bean hulls that are used for garden mulch can also poison pets when ingested. I have seen here several cases of illness after rooting around in gardens and this could be the cause? I did not know that these hull were so used. |
They are poisoneous but its not in all mulches. For example there is all pine or cedar mulches |
Cocoa bean mulch Thank goodness it is not in all mulches, but I did not know that the poisonous cocoa hulls were in some mulches. I am wary of all soil additives as they can be made of wood chips that are treated with chemicals sometimes. It's a dangerous world out there for our little ones!! |
There is some truth in the Cocoa Mulch as being dangerous, but this was taken off the market years ago. For more information read this: snopes.com: Cocoa Mulch Danger to Dogs. Also, ingesting chocolate isn't really as dangerous as some would have you believe, it's the dark chocolate that is dangerous because it has more Theobromine. For example, one chocolate kiss won't cause a problem but if they eat 1 ounce of chocolate per pound of body weight, rush them to a vet. Also, once they’ve had a taste of chocolate, they will seek it out. |

Sorry, this is a serious subject, but that sentence jumped out at me. I'm glad you clarified about the dark chocolate vs milk chocolate issue. Many don't know this and get so scared if an M&M drops on the floor. I'm not saying to let the dog eat it, but I think so many have unnecessary anxiety attacks over such things. |
