Nail clipping nightmares Well, that was an adventure. This is the first time I cut my Yorkie's nails at home. Before the vet always cut them, however, I live a 1/2 hr away and he understood the need to do it home once in a while. She does go nuts so he gave me a mild tranquilizer. He said it is similar to Xanax. Strangely, she is fine with bathing, brushing, and cleaning her face. So anyway, I feel bad enough drugging my 8 month old puppy. I waited 25 min so I could see she was a little loopy and slightly uncoordinated. I was careful not to cut the quick. The only person bleeding was me when she bit me once. I laid her on her side, my bf who she knows well held her down and I cut her nails with the best clippers I could buy. Not guillotine type, but the good ones so there was no splitting. There was so much howling and crying I feel like Atilla the Hun. I gave her treats afterward and she is sitting happily chewing a bone in her playpen with the door open. Does this get any better?:confused: |
I have never had that problem with cutting my dog's nails.. Nena has white nails and it's easier for me to see where I have to cut. With rufus I use and electric nail file because his nails are black and I'm afraid to cut too much. Have you always use nail clippers? Why don't you try and use nail files and see if it helps? |
I have the file, the noise freaks her out. When she is relaxed and getting petted I even try to touch her feet more. Unfortunately, I think she just may take time to come around. I have had her since 8 weeks, so no one has hurt her before, she was never abused. She seems fine now and wants to be petted and cuddled. I know I did not get the quick, she is not bleeding and the howling was not with any specific nail. I think she just doesn't like being out of control. |
Some dogs are great with it, others will always be difficult. I have one of each, but thankfully I don't have to trim nails because they wear them down walking on pavement every day. (I take the cowards' way out :)) Keep practicing with your pup. Be confident and act like it is no big deal -- like they do at the vet's office and groomers. If you are anxious, your pup will sense it. You could try bringing out the clippers every day and pretend to trim. Just touch her paws lightly without actually trimming. This may help acclimate her to it. You are a great mom for keeping her nails trimmed. It can be a tough job! |

I think she is fine now, sleeping in my lap. If I were really Atila the Hun, she probably wouldn't do that, lol. She is quite good at giving me a guilt trip. |
