Well it's that time again-FLEAS!! I just dread flea season. Poor Sophie was a flea magnet last year and I am afraid of all the flea treatments for these little guys. I had to switch her heartworm med to Heartguard because they discontinued the Interceptor which I liked but now the flea treatment worries start. I was reading about this "all natural" flea tag you put on their collar but there were quite a few comments that it didn't work. Neurotoxins don't seem like something I want to give my Yorkie! :( Here in Georgia fleas will again be a big problem. I am open to suggestions. |
I use Frontline Plus for Crimson(yorkie-4lbs) & Dooley(pitbull-70lbs). BTW, + Heartgard Plus. Revolution (fleas & heartworms in one)for the cats Biggles(Spyhnx) & Buttons(DSH) I use Trifexis(fleas & heartworms-but not ticks) for Milo(poodle-7lbs). I ocassionally add FL to his in the summer for tick protection. As you know...we are in the south... they are everywhere. Some people treat their yards and home. I haven't done that but many people do. I treat all my animals every 30 days and never see fleas. You just can't trust the "all natural" stuff IMO. IMHO, Frontline has been around awhile. I trust it. And you can't go wrong with it. If you are worried, buy a single dose from you vet to try. How big is Sophie. Some people half the small dose because it is labeled for 0-22lbs. I think that is .5ml that she would need but I wouldn't know how to properly save the rest if you didnt have another dog or cat to use it on. Maybe someone can chime in. |
Sophie weighs 5.5lbs. Part of my fear is that I have read about issues not surfacing until they have had about 3 doses over 3 months, and then they are neurological. She is even kind of wimpy after her vaccinations so I have to break them up by at least a month apart. Thanks so much for you input, I really appreciate it. |
I completely understand your fear. Maybe have your vet order regular frontline not the plus. Crimson was 1.6lbs when I started using frontline plus on her. I never let them give Crimson more than 1 vaccine at a time either. Hiring in a pest control person while you take Sophie away for the day sounds like a better thing for you. I don't know how often they would have to come but could imagine more then a couple. I hope, someone chimes in with other responses that way I can read them. :) Keep me informed on what you decide. Good Luck! |
I wish we had a better solution for fleas, but there isn't one that doesn't carry risks or downsides. I hate putting Frontline on my boys and I resisted last year until we met our first flea. Seeing what only a couple of fleas can do to a dog -- poor Teddy was miserable -- I applied the Frontline, splitting the dose between my boys. We also vacuumed the entire house, under furniture, and the car every single day. Combed the boys head to toe after each outing. It was exhausting work. I understand not wanting to use Frontline, but reactions and stress from being bitten by fleas is not good for our pups' health. |

You took the words right out of my head! |
Most of the over the counter flea stuff is dangerous to use. The preventatives you get from the vet are safer. I dont like using them either but I dont like flea infestations or dogs having reactions to flea bites either |
Here we go with these darn fleas again. I just hate putting anything on my Yorkies! I am searching the web for anything safe. So far nothing. Little dogs seem to have more problems than the big guys. Last year I used Revolution with no problems. This year I don't know. Sure wish someone would come up with a safe spray or flea jacket or some thing to bust these stinkin bugs! If I hear of anything I will be back to tell you! Otherwise read the internet reactions to dog meds and make a wise decision. |
We use Comfortis..hopefully this will continue to work, we have had no issues and have been using it since we rescued Foxy... |
Do we have to resort to keeping our babies in tubes? I haven't had any problems with fleas, yet, knock on wood. I did read somewhere that apple cider vinegar and water sprayed on their coats is helpful, but I haven't tried that. |
