Question about weight? Have read and read about quality/health of Yorkies. I have a 7 pound older Yorkie and am looking to get another. I have spoken to several breeders, some good reputations.... many bad! Darn puppy mills !!!! Anyway, I would really like to know if a 3 - 3 1/2 pound (full grown) is a healthy dog and will be in the future; if well taken care of by the owner? There is a very good breeder and AKC show dog owner that had one very small Yorkie in a litter... she says is too small for her breeding/show purposes. I am really not sure what to think?? Would really like anyone's opinions and experiences. I have been looking for a small Yorkie, but that small just scares me with regards to health? Thank You all. |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk. It is possible for a very small Yorkie to be healthy if the dog is well bred. |
There are a lot of healthy small yorkies. The question is if they were bred to be small or are naturally small. |
I agree.....If they are healthy, you should not have any more issues than with a standard size yorkie. I have 3 yorkies....one is around 3 1/2 pounds and healthy. She is 10 months and will hopefully get to be around 4 lbs. I have had not hypoglycemic issues with her and only a mild intestinal infection. You do need to feed frequent meals with the smaller ones. I also have one that is 19 weeks and almost 2 lbs. For the first time today, she had a hypoglycemic episode! It is scary and the smaller they are the bigger the possibly of this happening. Some are fine but there is always a possibility with any size to have health issues! |
Thank you.... from speaking with the breeder, this pup was un-expectedly small. The parents are small, but 4.5 - 5.5 # each. She breeds small, however not this small. She is basing the expected wt on the growth chart and her current growth and age now?? I hope to be meeting her this weekend and with conversations over the phone so far, she does sound true blue. Doesnt sound like the pup was expected or bred to be so small. She didnt say the word "runt", but that is what I am guessing. |
The AKC says they should weigh between 4 and 7 pounds. If you want to look at what their breed standards are, go to Yorkshire Terrier Page. |
Size can matter some but the breeder and the dogs she breeds is what really matters. Like does she do testing and has she ever had an illnesses pop up in her lines? Its also really hard to say for certain what size a pup will be they can make a good guess but sometimes the pups will surprise you and sprout up. |

Thank you Everyone for the Great info!! I think I will wait and pass on the 3-3 1/2 pound little baby I was thinking about getting. I am just too scared of illness with her :-( My current baby girl (7+ years) has had come congenital issues and has had several surgeries and has been on meds for many years. She is now going blind (prob from steroids) and I may have to put her down in the near future. It is breaking my heart.... I just cant take a chance on anything occuring with a new baby who might get sick or have some genetic issue. If any of you are breeders, I would like a little girl with the same coloring of my current baby. Here is what I am looking for: 4-5 pound female, light in color, more silver/blue and blonde in color then black... I saw the pic of "daisy" cant look back at her momma to get her name write now as I am typing this. However, my little girl looks very similar to daisy in color and in her eyes.... I have noticed that the eyes of yorkies are different and I am particular with eyes... hahaha hope that doesnt sound wierd. I am not in a real big hurry, but would like a pup before my little girl goes. I would appreciate it if anyone has any litters coming up with the characteristics I am looking for. Thanks again for all your good advice. |
