How much water for an 8 week old puppy? I was told to just leave the food out for him to eat as much as he wants until he's a little older, but I'm not sure how much water he needs during the day. Should I leave out water as well or should I give him water a certain amount of times a day? I would think if he had access to it all day that it would hinder the potty training process. Any help is greatly appreciated. |
Leave water out all day. I disagree with trainers who recommend limiting water for potty training purposes. Yorkies are too small and can dehydrate quickly. They drink when they need to. I wouldn't risk not having them drink. For potty training, focus more on limiting freedom to a small area where you can supervise or contain problems when you can't watch. |
I leave water out all day, and take him outside (potty pad) every two hours. You don't want them to get dehydrated. |
Puppies need access to fresh clean water at all times! At 8 weeks old, his bladder is tiny and he's not going to have much muscle control until around 16 weeks. You're going to have months to potty train him. Don't rush it. Right now work on teaching him where to go potty, not when. |
I was worried about this too when we brought our new puppy home. I was worried that she was drinking enough water. Checked with our vet and she told us..."She's doing and growing just fine...and she is just a little puppy. Keep giving her fresh water each day and she will get what she needs." So that's what I do and she's still growing strong. Oh, be sure to wash the water bowl daily too. I wouldn't want to drink water with other "stuff" in it. LOL |
Thanks everyone. I really wasn't sure. I have been leaving it out all day since he is so little. |

Have water available all day. I do take the water away one hour before bedtime, though. |
Louie doesn't drink a lot of water but I still leave it out all day for him. Genea |
