Reaction to K9 Advantix II Was wondering if anyone's dog had a strange reaction to Advantix. I followed the instructions and she seemed fine for the first couple of hours but then her behavior became really strange. She acted like she was scared, anxious, skittish ,panting, ears back and down, wanting to hide under things and running around like something was bothering her back. That night she was up a lot but trying to sleep as close as she can get to me. At 5AM I gave her a bath and scrubbed the area where I put the Advantix. There was no rash visible. She ate her breakfast and then slept on me for three hours. She was not her playful self but as the day went on she started to become better. Never using this product on her again. |
I actually bought K9 Advantix II for the first time and applied it to Toki yesterday afternoon...no side effects whatsoever which I was glad to see since that was our first time using a topical medication for fleas. Maybe your pup is just sensitive to a certain ingredient or the application on the skin or something. Years ago, my parents' beagle had a reaction to a topical flea/tick treatment (gosh...I wish I could remember which brand) that was different from the one they normally used...it made her itch like crazy and pant so they switched her back to her original one and had no issues like that again. I hope you can find some treatment that your pup won't have a reaction to... I know it is scary to see them react like that. |
I recently switched from frontline plus to K9 Advantix II also. Mimi & Turbo seemed to have very itchy backs & it bothered them. Vet noticed blackheads on Mimi's back, along the spots where I applied the advantix! I won't be using it on her, will use frontline for her bc she had no negative reactions to it & it always worked well for us. Turbo had brown spots where I applied frontline & my other 2 Momo & Princess hated it, they would sulk all day & try to get it off them by rubbing everywhere...so that's why I switched to advantix. But I think it must be like food, what works for 1 dog, doesn't work so well for the other! Maybe next time, try applying half the dose, & the other half the next day & see how she does? (or half dose in morning & the other half in the evening) |
We have a dog who is sensitive to any thing we have tried for fleas and ticks. The last time, she had such a bad reaction....we had to rush her to the vet because she had a horrible rash all over her body, scratching, shaking, panting. It took a shot to counter act the ingredients and then Benedryl. It took a long time for her skin to clear! We were told to not use any thing on her...not even a shampoo. Thankfully, we have not had a flea problem and only a few ticks since her bad reaction. The vet told us if there are ever any symptoms after an application of flea/tick medication, to immediately shampoo them! |
Thanks. I might try Frontline and just use half the dose. We have lots of deer in my yard so I have to protect her from the ticks. I am too nervous to even use half the dosage of Avantix. Just giving the remaining ones away. |
We use Frontline.....I don't know if your vet would do this.....Since my yorkies are small (all under 8 lbs.) my vet will measure out the dose each one needs according to their weight. The last time, she did this, I was able to treat 3 dogs with 1 container of Frontline! None had reactions, it still worked and it cost me so much less! |
I use Advantix II and have never had a problem. I only use half the little container on each of my two dogs - I have never used the entire container on one dog. I put a small drop between the shoulder blades and a small drop a little lower on the back then throw the rest away. I haven't had any reaction so far but as you know, each dogs reacts differently. |

I have been using Advantix II on Callie for a while and she gets a little tired afterwords but that's it. Nothing else will keep the ticks off. |
The permethrin in Advantix can make them feel like something is crawling on them. It is a nasty ingredient. I'd only consider it if Frontline fails in your area. My vet office stopped carrying it because of this... |
I hate to have to put these chemicals on our Yorkies! Last summer I was a wreck on the internet researching all this stuff. I finally went with Revolution and did not have a problem, thank you Lord! But that med, you have to go have a heartworm test before the vet will prescribe it. It goes into the bloodstream of the dog. Now this year I am looking at the different flea and tick stuff, hearing all the reactions and just am sick of this! Can't someone come up with a natural way to kill these darn fleas and ticks! Not our dogs! These chemicals are so bad for them. Help anyone have any advice. |
I used to use the Advantix, but Brody couldn't handle it, made him itchy. I split the doses between both and only use Frontline Plus now. I do have to say, I hate using the flea medications, but prior to me applying my first dose this season I pulled a tick off each Brody and Rhianna. I usually start the routine May 1st, but had to start up 2nd week of April this year. Ticks look to be very active already! |
