Parmesan Cheese ?? I have been having a hard time getting Gizmo to eat, I read on here to try putting a little Parmesan cheese on the food, so this is what I did took his 1/4 cup of kibble and put a little water on it just enough to get it damp, and then put 1/2 teaspoon of the cheese on it mixed it up and he ate it all, I have done this now for 2 days and he is eating so good. My question is, is it ok to do this every day or is it bad for him to have that much of the parmesan cheese? |
Good question. I would use the smallest amount possible that entices him to eat. Parmesan cheese is fairly stinky so you may be able to get away with a lot less than 1/2 tsp. Cheeses can put weight on a dog so keep an eye on him. You could also switch up and use cottage cheese, yogurt, noodles, green beans, carrots, a cooked egg... just to keep him interested. Do not feed him any onions, grapes, or raisins, they are toxic. |
Thank you, I will try cutting it down, I just have a hard time getting him to eat he is so picky, I have him on Blue buffalo puppy now and was eating good until about 4 days ago. reading through the posts seen it mentioned on here so thought i would try that. |
I agree with KJC that you don't need 1/2 teaspoon of parmesan, and I would switch it up with some other dog friendly treats. Weight is a concern, and possible pancreatitis. Fatty foods are believed to be a possible trigger of pancreatitis. My boys are 9 pounds and I give them 2 tiny shreds of parmesan every other day and they are content. |
I agree with Kjc, use as little as you can to entice them. Usually a quick sprinkle on top is enough. Remember, they go through growth spurts and sometimes there just aren't that hungry, but unless something is seriously wrong, they will eat when they are hungry. Kibble is made to be just tasty enough for them to eat, but not so tasty that they will overeat, because with some foods, a dog would eat until it got sick. Parmesan cheese comes in really handy, when doing a food change, but once they get use to the food, they will eat it without the cheese. I still use the little thin flake kind, as a treat, they really love it. |
Thank you for the advice, I am still new to these little guys and thier little quirks LOL I read alot of posts on here and so grateful to have found it. I don't post alot because I don't know enough to give advice but I sure do get great advice Thank you all!! |
Parm cheese I agree with other posters here and have found it is a really good addition to food for picky eaters. Due to the fat and salt dangers I put very little on the food. I take a pinch, like a pinch of salt, and very little goes a long way. Measuring with a teaspoon is too much. They do get addicted though and tend to wait for the cheese before they will eat. But if you use so little I don't think it is too bad a habit. Good luck, join the picky eaters club. LOL! |

I use actual grated parm cheese, not the shakey stuff. I put just 3 or 4 tiny strands in the bottom of each pups dinner bowl and put the kibble on top. Everyone eats like noone has fed them for a week. If the parm is not in the bottom of Mina's bowl she does not eat. Ive been doing this for over a year. |
Parm I use the shaker so far, hope he does not demand the fresh grated variety. LOL! It sure does give them an odor they love. I must say the kibble smells so bland to me, I do not blame our babies wanting it spiced up a bit. Any other food additions that help our picky ones? I would like a back up if he gets fed up with the Parm. |
I purchase a large container of grated parm from Sam's every month. We use it for other meals as well. I have crushed up cooked greenbeans, peas. Scrambled egg,I split 2 eggs among 5 small dogs. My last ditch effort to be used only in emergencys to get Mina to eat is jared baby meats, make sure that onion is not listed as one of the ingredients. This is reserved for when I am out of town and she refuses to eat. |
Thank you for the menu choices to try when things get difficult. The baby food chicken I have tried too, but he tends to eat that and leave the kibble unless I mix well. |
also I seem to think they are all scent motivated rather than taste. Boi la chicken breast in spring water (boneless) let cool, shread for training treats. strain the water and put it in ice cube trays. Melt one over the kibble food and they dogs scof it up. (no calories or fats for the most part) I had to do this for a while. Now she eats just the kibble..I am trying to get her yeasty ears under control so I put a half teaspoon of plain greek yogurt at breakfast. Plain tastes awful but she still eats it up. |
Thanks everyone for the other ideas on the adding to food, I tried the boiled chicken breast and shredded the meat but for some reason it gave gizmo the runs. |

I use to use parmesan cheese in Daisy\'s food bc she would not eat it when I started with the probiotics but I would only sprinkle a little. |
