yeast question
 

I posted a while back about how Jess always gets that wet dog smell within a day after her bath. Any way I couldnt figure it out until the groomer said she has yeasty ears. Not an infection but yeast. She didnt think she needed a vet and the vet had seen her the day before and said they needed to be cleaned and plucked but no infection. So she was going to the groomer next day anyway so I let them do it. She smelled GREAT ...for a two days..then back to wet dog smell and she was itching under her chin alot (she does that anyway) I didnt realize yeast can spread and i think she prob has it there too.
So I bought the ear cleaner but have just given her a bath and rinsed her in a solution of half white distilled vinegar and half water. I also cleaned her ears as best I could (dont know what im doing so just used the solution on a cotton ball) I then gave her dinner with a scoop of plain greek yogurt. I am stopping any treats that contained sugar for now (even veggies) potatoes etc in her wet food. I am giving her only her royal canin and some boiled chicken. Is there anything ese I should do? Is royal canin right for a dog with yeasty ears? I may be nose sensitive but it really bothers me. It even makes my chest tight...

I always use drops in their ears after bath s just in case any water gets in them. When you clean out her ears is there a lot of gunk? If so I would take her to the vet bc yeast can get out of hand and grow fast.The Vet will have drops that will help too!
It does sound like you are doing the right things though with the drops, and yogurt. You can also give probiotics in her food. My Dog Daisy gets it every morning bc she has had lyme disease.

hwere do I get dog probiotics?

e vitamins online I buy the dds capsules and just open it up and sprinkle it on her food.

Just curious if she's been to the vet to confirm that it is yeast? Is there brown gunk in her ears? (usu a sign of yeast) She'll need to have a skin cytology to confirm that it is yeast.

That is a very good point....If she hasn't gone to the vet she needs to take her bc there is a difference between a yeast infection and an ear infection and putting the wrong drops in her ear could cause more harm.

Maybe the dog groomer is getting water in her ears:( I would ask the groomers when she goes to please be careful with getting water in her ears bc she is having problems with yeast. I would also get some drops from pet co that help dry the ears after baths.

Yes I read that she was @ the vet, but was a skin scrape done w/a cytology to confirm that it was yeast? They look under the microscope & they can determine if it's bacterial or yeast or both & treat accordingly. Skin Cytology doesn't cost much, maybe around $30(?).
Princess has yeast & she had to be bathed in special shampoo that vet prescribed. I also had to clean out her ears, she had bad brown gunk coming out of them, she was very itchy all over too. I also had to eliminate 'sugary' foods from her diet like you are doing now.:thumbup: She's doing much better now.

Do you use a water bowl? This is how Princess' yeast problem started when she was a puppy...from the water bowl! Her chin would always get wet & she'll dig around on the ground/ grass outside & they saw some yeasty bacterial growth in the cytology. Since then, I changed to water bottles & it helped a lot, kept her dry. Now we use both, water & food in ceramic or stainless steel bowls.

She is scratching much less since I eliminated sugar (veggies fruit potatoes) from her diet. Well she gets her benadryl in watermelon but if someone told me I had to eliminate chocolate Id have to have the occasional lindt chocolate ball..:teeth: so a little for her..for medicinal purposes:wink:
