What food should I be using? HI.....I'm getting my new little 8 wk old Yorkie next week. What is the best food to feed the puppy and then.........when he is an adult? Thanks. |
Its normally best to keep them on the same food the breeder is using for a little while. Its best though that yorkies stay with there moms until 12 weeks is there any way your breeder will keep him until 12 weeks? |
There is really no "one best food". I would stick with what your breeder was feeding at first and then leave enough to mix slowly with whatever food you want to transition to. If you're looking for foods available at Petsmart or Petco, Royal Canin, Wellness, Nature's Variety, and even Eukanuba has a few decent formulas. If you're willing to go to a specialty-type store, I like Fromm, Annamaet, Dr. Tim's, Acana, Precise, and a few others. |
We like royal canin. |
Puppy's momma and I are still weaning our babies at 8 weeks...they are on Royal Canin Starter for puppies and I mix a little Royal Canin mousse for puppies in with the kibble and I will put about a tablespoon of warm water over that and mix it up....the kibble softens nicely and they love the mousse. By 12-14 weeks, I have stopped adding the warm water and the mousse too....just getting the kibble. |
I have a new little girl coming home next month & I recently decided to feed her Royal Canin for Yorkie Puppies. Then at 10 months, I'll switch her to the Royal Canin for Yorkie adults. I've never had a puppy at 8 weeks old. But YorkieMom1 is a respected breeder, so I would probably add the Royal Canin Mousse & water if I did. I saw the Starter Mousse at my Petco the other day. |
chester has been on solid gold, it has good puppy food |

My breeder fed our Yorkie puppy Royal Canin for Yorkshire Terrier puppies, and she absolutely loves it! It's balanced, nutritious, and made from quality ingredients. Blue Buffalo is also good, but our Bella prefers the Royal Canin because the kibbles are smaller and easier to chew. Royal Canin also makes a dry food for adult Yorkies as well. |
PS -- I got my Yorkie at 8 weeks (it's the minimum age you can purchase a puppy in Illinois) and she is doing great! She took to potty training and socializing right away. |

I use Blue Buffalo's Wilderness formula for my puppy. I got him at 12 weeks and he was on Eukenuba and we transitioned him over over a 2 week period. He is now about 19 weeks and doing just fine =] |
I my 8 week old pup is on blue buffalo freedom, the chunks are a bit big so I just crunch them in my blender to make them a bit smaller until his teeth get bigger, he gobbles them up. my 8 month old pup has no problem eating the bb. |
