Wheezing after surgery?
 

So, Jackson had a dental on Monday.

He's been doing this wheezing sound on and off ever since. It's not like constant, but every few hours or so, he wheezes for about 30 seconds, like he's having trouble breathing, or allergies or something weird?

I know they said it was normal to have some coughing from the tube down their throat, but almost 5 days later?

My other thought was kennel cough but it doesn't really sound like it. But here's the thing, he had pre-op bloodwork on March 29th and was going to have the dental that Tuesday on April 2nd. BUT they tell me 'oh we didn't realize he didn't have his bordatella UTD' and usually they said it wouldn't be an issue, they could just keep him in their 'quarantined' room, but since it was Easter time, their kennels were all booked up or something. So they gave him the bordatella vaccine (which I didn't really want to do, ugh). Then they were like 'oh, it takes 10 days to kick in, so you can't do the dental this Tuesday'. Long story short... I was away the following week, etc, and dental ended up being this past Monday the 15th.

I know some dogs actually GET KC or whatever from the vaccine... but it would it have taken that long to kick in?

Or, do you think it's still just irritation from the tube? It's just weird though because it's not a hacking, or a gag, or a cough, it's a WHEEZE.

Didn't know if this was normal. Probably give the vet a call in the morning anyway.

Georgie had the exact same thing after his surgery too. It took a week or so for it to go away. I would call the Vet to ease your mind.

I have no idea, but hope Jackson feels better soon. :( Def call the vet and see what they say.

Not to scare you, but after Scrappy had surgery for what we thought was an absessed tooth, he was wheezing and breathing really hard, also not eating but drinking tons of water. He ended up getting really bad seizures and eventually passed from them. :( I'm sure whatever is ailing Jackson is nothing like that, but just reminded me of him and how scary and sad it was to hear him like that and not be able to do anything. :(

Pixie had some wheezing after a dental for a few days. I would check with the vet just to be safe since it is getting farther away from the surgery. Hope it goes away soon.

Yeah he's feeling fine otherwise. Went to the dog park today, ran like crazy, went for a walk yesterday, eating and drinking and pooping normal and all. And it's just like every now and then, like a slight irritation, it doesn't seem to bother him too much.

That's good to know that it happened to them too!

Robably something simple like an irritated epiglottis. Maybe laryniospasm type thing. i'd call and run it by a tech.

:thumbdown to the bordatella forcing. Honestly, I'd find a place to do surgery at without this requirement. And also quarantine units are disinfected thoroughly, but it is where parvo/distemper/lepto dogs are kept.

And yeah, I know. This place is usually very very good, and accommodating too. Always been very happy with them, we love our personal vet, except they are very pricey - one of the more expensive in the area. They've never forced anything on me whatsoever in the past. I honestly think this was techs being confused. I kind of wish I would've just asked to speak directly to our vet, I feel like she wouldn't have even cared.

But what irritates me is since he didn't have the surgery until April 15 anyway, the bordatella vaccine was useless.... because clearly, it's no longer Easter and so they wouldn't be over-booked and he could've stayed in the other room. I just was kinda put in an awkward position and had an 'uhhh... okay, go ahead' moment when put on the spot.

No more bordatella for him though ever. He's had is 3x now and the last time after he had the vaccine, he actually got KC anyway :rolleyes: I won't be doing any more DHP either at this point.

Poor guy. Hope its just a little irritation but maybe try to get a video of it to show to your vet and that might help because if he is like Callie then he wont do it at the vet office.

I tried this tonight actually and he of course he stopped right when I began filming haha. I won't bring him back into the vets if I don't have to. At this point, I just don't think it's serious enough. He had enough stress last week. So I am sure a video would be helpful if I have to show it or whatever. :)

Sorry to hear this. Did they give the intranasal KC or injectable? There can be problems with some of the vaccine getting into the lungs with the intranasal.

Also during a dental, a tool like an ultrasonic water pic is used, and occassionally some water can follow the trach tube down into the lungs. The positioning of the dog's head helps to prevent this, but they are turned over midway through the procedure in order to gain access to the other side of the mouth. So if his head was not positioned correctly, or if he had excess water in his mouth before being turned, some water could have reached the lungs.

I believe irritation from the tube occurs right after, not 5 days after a procedure, and would have cleared by now.

Fluid in the lungs can lead to pneumonia.

Max had something in between a reverse sneeze and a wheeze for about a week after the last time he had anesthesia. I watched the videos about CT and reverse sneezing because I was worried.

I hope Jackson's goes away soon.

Intranasal.... I'm so mad at myself for allowing him to get the vaccine. Ugh. Never again.

I'm glad it does seem common, at least. I googled too and apparently it's happened to a lot of dogs after a dental or surgery.
