HELP! My new adopted yorkie will not eat or drink I just adopted a 5 year old yorkie. She is 4lbs. She's the most sweetest thing. She will not eat her food or drink water. I am feeding her Yorkie Royal Canine food. I mixed it with some wet food and added water to the kibbles so they are softer. She will eat a few and then back away from the bowl like shes scared or try to hide the bowl by rubbing her nose on the floor. She was at a breeders and I think all the dogs were fed together. I tried different bowls, plates, and even put it on the floor. Nothing helps. She also refuses to drink water. I tried chicken broth, fruit, honey, ice cubes. Nothing works. She's had about 1/2 cup of water in 5 days. Maybe 1/2 cup of food in 5 days. I'm really worried. I took her to the vet and he said that's normal sometimes in a new environment. Her blood test came back normal. It does say she is slightly dehydrated. She won't even drink after we take a walk in the hot sun. What to do?? I'm going to buy a different dog food today and hopefully that helps. For the first time today she threw up a tiny bit in the morning but seems fine now. And a few hours later she did actually ate one of her treats. She wouldn't even touch them before. HELP! I love this little girl so much! |
Sorry I am just seeing this. She may just be having a hard time adjusting to her new home. Did you cal the breeder to see if she had any ideas on how to get her to eat and drink. Did you try feeding her on a paper plate or putting it on the floor? Sometimes they are afraid of the bowls or china plates. Did the vet give her some sub q fluids so she doesn't dehydrate. You may have to syringe water into her until she starts drinking and eating on her own. She could be throwing up a little yellow bile from an empty tummy. Hopefully you can find something she will eat or she will settle in soon. Please keep us posted. |
I agree with the above. Often when I get new fosters they usually don't eat for a few days. I can't remember one eating normally from day one. |
This is her adjustment period...it takes time. I would offer chopped boiled chicken and some green beans....with a little chicken broth on it...just about a tablespoon...that will keep that chicken from drying out...and it will have enough sodium in it to make her thirsty. You loving on her and bonding with her, will get her over this...she is missing her home where she has been for ?? years....offer cottage cheese, ice cream, anything that you think she will enjoy...you can get back to a "proper diet" a little later when she is over this! She may enjoy cucumber bits...they have alot of water in them and if she eatc some sliced/chopped cucumber, she will get water too... |
I agree with above... Boiled chicken, beans, cottage cheese, vanilla yogurt.... As for drinking, when my Izzy LOVE 100% coconut water...I mean she goes NUTS over it :) lots of love and cuddle time.. Just like having an infant :) |
I had that issue with my Dolce, he was eating very good while at the breeders house, but when we got home " a different environment for him" he wouldn't eat, I called the breeder she recommended that I put shredded cheese in his food, it really worked and for a day or so I gave him water with a spoon. He would only eat the food out of my hand.. Your dog will be fine she's adjusting to her environment. |
This happened when I brought home Max and I discovered he would only drink out of a stainless steel bowl. You mentioned trying different dishes though. Also, Max will not touch kibble with water on it. Did the breeder put water on her kibble? I would ask the breeder how the dogs were fed and try to mimic that as closely as possible. Hope you can find the right combo soon. |
Jessie went through a period where she would walk around the bowl, rub her nose on the floor around it like she wanted to bury it. If a blanket was nearby she would try and cover it..she would eventually eat it but it took forever. I have found yorkies can be very quirky and change alot . She is a completely different dog than the one I picked up four months ago. She was a breeders dog kept for show but was determined she was to timid and quiet to be a show dog. HA! this doggy now thinks shes a doberman and gets right in peoples faces. give it time...you will be amazed at how much the your pup changes in the next few months...just get some nutrical and rub it on her gums if she wont eat. I had to do that too... |
I think it's just the adjustment thing, too. But, if she continues to not drink, I would definitely give her water in a syringe. Dehydration is so dangerous. I had this problem with Maxie back at the end of January. She would not eat anything at all. She finally came around. I gave her shredded cheese, too, just to get her to eat SOMETHING! She still does not want dry food. I have never had another that gave me a problem about eating dry food. She only wants the "moist" kind. |
