possible liver shunt/need help with diet The tests came back inclusive my Daisy was sick the other day,vet ran some tests(bile) & they came back inconclusive , but I'm not taking any chances. If anyone can help with diet choices? I'm in Canada so I bought low protien med -cal. But what choices for treats or canned? Please help she is only going on 2 & she loves her treats which include her wet food. But I'm not sure anymore about treats  |
I would ask your vet for a prescription diet like Royal Canin Hepatic or Hill's I/D...something along those lines at least until you can definitively rule out or diagnose liver shunt. These Rx foods have both dry and canned varieties...I know some people have cut up the canned food into little cubes and baked them to make little liver-friendly treats. You could also probably give something like frozen green beans if your pup enjoys those. I know that many YTers also have had success feeding their pups homecooked meals as well (after consulting with a nutritionist, of course). Did your vet suspect a shunt based on just the bile acid test results? I would try to pursue more diagnostic testing to see if your pup does indeed have a liver shunt and if so, the vet can determine if it is operable. I know that when Toki had elevated ALT levels and elevated bile acid levels, we had both an ultrasound (not the most reliable method but can detect liver size and if there is a large external shunt) and scintigraphy performed in order to rule out liver shunt (which determined the type of treatment we pursued). Toki ended up having nonencephalopathic microvascular dysplasia...because she had no other symptoms, the specialists at our vet school didn't suggest any type of special diet and just recommended that we keep an eye on her and supplement her with adenosyl/Denamarin. I know lots of others here have pups with liver issues and will hopefully be able to offer you advice and even more experience than I have. I hope that your Daisy starts to feel better! Please keep us posted. |

I agree...sounds like a specialist is in order for your pup. You mentioned in the subject line that she has a possible liver shunt. You need to have a diagnosis before you can properly manage her. Good luck and please keep us posted! |
