Benadryl
 
For those of you whom I have asked this question a million times, please forgive me for asking again. I am nervous about giving the doggies anything that doesn't come directly from the vet, and our office doesn't sell benadryl.

What kind of Benadryl liquid is safe for our little ones? I can't seem to find any without the flavorings like bubblegum. Is this safe?

I want to have the Benadryl on hand in case of a bee or wasp sting, and I always have our vet give us the correct dosage for my boys.

Good question! My vet also gives Benedryl but I don't know what kind or the dosage. I guess I will have to check this out.

yes there is child version that is dye free i believe...

The standard small doggie dose of benadryl is 1mg per pound of dog. Therefore, a 6 lb dog would get 2.5ml or 1/2 tsp of childrens benadryl which is 12.5mg/5ml.

So is the 1/2 tsp. of baby Benadryl for all sizes of dogs? Meaning could you give the same dose for a 1lb and up?

my vet told me to get the regular Benadryl tabs 25 mg and give 1/2 tab per day

No. The dose is 1mg per pound of dog. Dog weighs 1 lb, you would give 1mg which is a 0.4ml. I wouldnt give a tiny dog anything without first consulting a vet, though.
This is just the recommended dose for dogs.
Purely weight based.

I'm not familiar w/ Baby Benadryl, but I have Children's which is alcohol free...but I would think the Baby one is also loll. They didn't have an unflavored one, so I just grabbed the Cherry flavor. Didn't need to use it yet...just have it in their 1st aid kit. So is flavored bad? I would think they'll hate it either way.

Thank you for clarifying that for me. I was just curious if the dose was the same.

It is actually childrens benadryl. There isn't another concentration for babies that I can find. As for flavored vs unflavored, I dont know, but I haven't heard or read of any contraindications. I can always remember the doggie dose, because it is double the amount we give children in the ER. Kiddos get 1mg per KG, not lb. Weird...

Just no xylitol or grape extract (I think they use fake grape flavoring which is fine). The kind that is 12.5mg/ml..

Sorry, half asleep. 12.5mg/5ml.

The CvS link is ame hrand. The Walgreens link is Walgreens brand. Yes, you should have the liquid on hand. For routine allergy issues I also use rhe pills.

Great thread! I was wondering this the other day- my dads dog is highly allergic to bees. Last time she got stung, she swell up soooo much and so fast, so my dad was just saying he wants to keep Benadryl on hand.

I need to get myself a doggie first aid kit with summer and outdoor activities coming up.

In a case like this he should have injecable drugs with the dog at all times. This is what I have to do for Ellie now.

Good to know! We took her to ER vet (she was struggling to be able to breathe) but of course it cost a pretty penny. Do you mean like an Epi pen?

Yup.

I just have inj benadryl for E. we were too far out from a vet when it happened. Almost lost her. So her backpack with drug goes with her whenever she leaves home and will be outside.

Your scary experience with Ellie is what plays in the back of my mind when my guys are sniffing around in the clover where bees lurk. I would like to have an injectable. Is this something a vet is willing to give anyone, or does the dog have to have a reaction to a sting first?

It is moreso for pups that have already reacted, esp. if more than a couple minutes from a 24/7 staffed vet. Never hurts to ask though.;)

Even for people who have an epi pen, it is highly recommended to go to the ED even if you feel better after using it, because the reaction may recur when the epi wears off and the patient may also need a course of steroids as well as benadryl to counteract the reaction. The epi pen is to keep the person (or dog) alive long enough to get further treatment. Of course, I know you, like I, would pay whatever it takes to protect our furbabies...but it sure would be nice to save that ER bill...:D

Even after injecting, a vet is still necessary.

we give are bella the child soft chew 12.5 mg walmart brand ! per are vet and she loves it. seems to work ! good luck
