Canine Caviar I feed Avery BB Freedom Grain Free and have since we've got him last May. He is 10# and 1 1/2 years old. I feed him 1/2 cup in the morning and 1/2 cup at dinner. Sometimes he eats both meals, sometimes only one. It only comes in one flavor and it seems he may be bored with it at times. I will add a little banana or pumpkin or yogurt sometimes and he'll usually eat it right up then. Anyways, I thought I'd try Canine Caviar so I requested a sample. It says NOT to mix it with his current food. Just start feeding straight Canine Caviar. Has anybody else done this? I thought it was always best to make a slow switch by adding a little of the new food to the old gradually until it was all the new food. Any thoughts or experience on this? |
I read that when we started Princess Sophie on CC Puppy but we did add it to what she was eating but only for the first week cause she was picking out the CC and leaving the other stuff, which wasn't any good anyway. She liked it so much and did not experience any problems going to straight CC. |
Allie was eating raw for 2 years and switched to cc no problems. |
I usually do switches cold-turkey. It's never seemed to bother Jackson. Also, you say you feed him 1/2 cup twice a day and he sometimes eats it sometimes doesn't... I think that seems a bit much... I know the bags often say that, but they seem to way over-estimate! He probably doesn't always eat it because he doesn't need it. Some 10lb'ers might, due to metabolism, etc, every dog is different. But my boy is 16lbs and I feed him 1/2 cupper day (each mix usually mixed with wet food) and he's very active. I will up it to 2/3 cup per day if he spends all day swimming. But if I was feeding him 1 cup a day, he'd be fat! lol |
Jackson, CC Will he eat CC kibble alone or does he need wet food mixed with it? My boy will not eat CC without 'seasoning' additions! It does not have any odor so perhaps that it it. Adding water did not help. Also you only feed half a cup for 16 pounds. I am feeding 3/4 cup and he is only 10 pounds, so it looks like I will have a fat boy soon. LOL. Better cut the quantity down. BTW. 'Cool' says she has asked for a CC sample. When I called CC they said they did not supply samples, I had to order and return if not liked. Perhaps Cool asked the CC seller? So far my dog is doing well on CC Chicken and Millet ALS kibble. |
Jasmin is 6.4 #. I feed her 1/4 in morning and at night. She is an active dog. When she gets bored of the food, i will boil a greenand add the liquid and a little bean to her food. |
My boys have sensitive stomachs, so I do slow food transitions. When I fed CC I mixed it with their old food for a week or 2. As for feeding amounts, I feed based on calories in the food. For a high calorie food (like CC) I was giving my 6lb dog a total of 1/4 cup a day and my 12lb 1/2 cup a day. They also get a bit of dehydrated food in the am and canned in the pm with their kibble. When they were eating a lower calorie food (taste of the wild), the 6lb got about 1/3 cup a day, and the 12lb got about 2/3 cup. Since they are small, it's super easy to tell if they are gaining or losing weight, so I use that as a guideline. |

CC Thank you. I guess sometimes they are hungrier than others and will eat the kibble alone then. My boy has me trained, if I put down the kibble he will look up at me until I put on the goodies, then he will eat. I am probably feeding too much anyway. |
Foxy did really well with the first sample bag of CC, but when we got the second bag, she lost interest. I think its a really good food, but she does not care for it anymore... |
CC I know, isn't that a pain! I am nearly at the end of the first bag and hope he will eat the new one. I think it is too 'pure' and has so little odor, they don't go for it. I have two things I add, 1: is a very small pinch of parmesan cheese (strong odor!) and/or 2: a quarter teaspoon of Gerbers Chicken and gravy. With these small amounts of additives, he will eat it all. Now he is so fussy I have to put a very tiny piece of chicken in his water before bed or he won't drink! Only at night when I want him to drink as he has dry kibble, other times he drinks water 'neat'. LOL! |
I switched my boys right over with no mixing with old food. I also do this when switching between CC grain free types (Wilderness & Open Sky). And I do not add soft food unless I want to. |
I switched Pnut over without mixing and he did just fine! |
Oopse..I meant to say "green beans" |
