Dental Advice Hi, I need some advice on dental cleaning & extractions. My yorkie Bailey is almost 8 & has always had really good teeth. I noticed a few months ago her breath was getting stinky & thought I would just wait until getting her shots to have the vet look at her teeth. I went in yesterday & the vet said her teeth are falling out..WTH? In just a matter of a few months her teeth are horrible. The estimate he gave me was for a range of $1200-$2000. He said the majority of her teeth need to be pulled out. I am absolutely sick to me stomach...he said to count on it being closer to the $2000 range. Bailey is 5lb 11 oz and has never had any major health issues. I cannot afford the $2000... What is the going rate for cleaning & extractions? Thank you from both Bailey & I....:aimeeyork |
The price sounds steep to me, but it's been a while since I've had a Yorkie need a lot of teeth pulled. I think $500-$600 is average for a cleaning, not sure about extractions. While the stinky breath probably indicates the vet is right, I'd be inclined to get a second opinion, at least in terms of the cost. A friend just had to have all of her Bichon's teeth pulled, and she was actually happy with the outcome. The breath instantly got better, and she could still eat just fine. Don't beat yourself up about it. Little dogs are notorious for teeth issues. I brush them daily, but I think all it's done is put off the inevitable a little longer. |
I get dentals on my all my dogs every 6 months from a year old as a prevention because it is common in toy dogs to have teeth problems. Dentals in my area are $150.00 with no extractions. I'm not sure how much money a total extraction would be. I can't believe there is such a big difference in Vet Services depending on where you live. I'm sorry, that seems terribly high. Maybe check prices at other Vets. He does need it done though if his teeth are bad it can cause a lot of health issues, needless to say the pain. |

People make the mistake of believing the teeth are ok by looking at the front ones. I am sorry this has happened....but your pup will feel better once the bad teeth are out. She also will be at less of a risk of kidney and heart issues...that bacteria does damage to them. Which brings up another issue. Hopefully you have done yearly blood work so you can compare...but you need to be sure and do them prior to a dental. I do think the price is steep and would seek a second opinion if I were you. I have never paid more than $700 and have had adult yorkies come to me and need most of their teeth pulled. Of course every area is different, but I encourage you to ask around .. people you know who have dentals done regularly. For that price, I believe you could go to a board certified dentist for your pup! Just be careful when price checking...make sure the vet is using proper anesthesia protocols and has experience with smalll dogs. Good luck and please keep us posted.. |
Thank you for the responses. I was actually thinking if I could find a better price someplace else than in my area, I would take her there & get the work done. The vet gave me antibiotics for her to take for a few weeks to clear up the infection. He also recommended that I start brushing her teeth again to help them fall out... :( We were playing ball with her this morning and a tooth actually fell out. I am so upset about her teeth. I lost my younger yorkie in September to a stomach tumor & am not ready to have anything happen to Bailey. I have had her since she was 8 weeks old. Financially, I am starting all over after a divorce so I just don't have the $2000 to spend right now. |

You cannot judge the health of the teeth by looking alone. 2/3 of the tooth lies below the gumline. X-rays are best but vets can tell a lot during the dental once the dog is under anesthesia and each gum pocket is measured and the tooth assessed for disease. I am not surprised that at 8 there will be extractions. Even when people do regular annual Dentals, teeth sometimes are lost. The price seems high to me. I paid less than that for 7 extractions, X-rays and a cleaning in Boston where the prices are high and I used a board certified vet dentist. |
I am paying about $450 for Jackson's dental cleaning ... next week. But it includes the pre op bloodwork, OraVet to apply when under and bring home, and pain meds, and all that. I thought that was fairly high, but when I got an estimate from the Animal Dental Center (where he went for a differnt tooth issue in 2011) it was going to cost close to $800! I decided to stick with our regular vet, who I trust. |
I am paying $300 on Thursday for Mandie's dental, 2 teeth extractions (baby teeth), and pre-op bloodwork (also includes the meds). |
My mom Yorkies Sammy's dental with 4 teeth pulled, pre op blood work, pain meds and antibiotics was some where between $300 and $400. I would get a second price quote. I am sure her teeth are causing her pain and if not taken care of she can just keep getting infections and it could get really serious. Teeth problems can cause other problems like with there heart. They definitely need to be taken care of. |
Hope you find a better price. My female had two baby teeth pulled when she was 8 mos old. They did it when I had her fixed and only charged an extra $40. |
Foxy last year had a dental, grade 4 horrible teeth with 1-2 extractions and it was a little over $200... |
