Need help with eating! 12 wks old puppy My 12 wk old yorkie Olivia is currently eating Wellness Just for Puppy and hasn't had any stomach problems or any significant problems but I am worried she is not eating enough. She is very tiny and i would guess a good 2 pounds. She was not eating well so i starting adding a little bit of warm water and she has been eating it like there is no tomorrow. We give her 1/4 cup twice a day but she has not been finishing it. Should we lower the portion and feed her more times per day? I know puppies sleep a lot but this girl sleeps and sleeps and sleeps and I just want to make sure it is not because of her lack of eating. This is our first yorkie, we have had pomeranians for years. Thanks for your time and help. |

hello, it is awesome that she likes the food and eating well.. so stay with that. yes , i would suggest splitting her meal into 4 x per day.. maybe 1/8 cup @ each meal... a pup that young and so small can suffer from low blood sugar if not eating enough so it is better to feed at least 4 small meals per day at least till she is 5 to 6 months old.. 1/4 cup is probably to much for her tummy all at once.. i hope this helps..:) |
I agree with Wanda's suggestions. Split the food into multiple meals. Puppies, especially tiny ones, should eat 3 - 4 times a day. Some people free freed, meaning they leave the kibble down all day, but you don't want to do that with added water because it will spoil faster. I had to hand feed Max his first year and now he is chow hound. You can do training exercises or play games with kibble rewards to get a kibble or two into her throughout the day. |
I am a fan of free feeding puppies and make sure you read on on hypoglycemia. |
My little guy .jpeg is 12 weeks as well. I totally know what you mean by sleeping all the time. This is my first yorkie or puppy for that matter. I did have concerns because he sleeps soooo much. He weights 2.75 now and actually I need to excercise him a little more. .jpeg eats nutro for puppies ... And he chows that stuff down! In the morning he is given a 1/8c with very little wet food as well ... And it disappears in quickly. I feed him throughout the day as well and also factor in what we do that day ... If we go outside or are doing training where he gets more treats on how much I feed him. Hope that made a little sense. |
